French Jews
Launch Protest
Bonn (JTA) — Nazi-
hunters Serge and Beate
Klarsfeld and another Fren-
ch activist, protesting Ger-
many's failure to act against
neo-Nazi violence, were
taken into the custody of
police who said they would
seek a warrant for their ar-
rest.
Forty-three other activists,
most of them members of the
Betar-France youth organ-
ization, were temporarily
detained but released.
The detentions took place
in the northern German city
of Rostock, the site of neo-
Nazi violence that led last
month to the torching of a
hostel for asylum-seekers.
The protesters had chartered
a bus, which took them from
Paris to Rostock, where they
began their demonstration.
The group of French Jews
and Beate Klarsfeld, who is
not Jewish, marched
through one of Rostock's
main streets which lead to
the town's municipality.
The demonstrators carried
banners saying, "Germany,
don't forget history" and
"Formerly gassed, today
deported," a reference to the
plight of thousands of Gyp-
sies who are to be expelled
from the country starting
Nov. 1.
Gypsies were victims,
along with Jews, in the gas
chambers.
At the town hall, the pro-
testers affixed a plaque to
the building's front entrance
condemning government
laxness against neo-Nazis
and Germany's intention to
deport Gypsies.
The protesters also
penetrated the building,
shouting anti- Nazi slogans
and calling on the au-
thorities to take action
against the anti-foreigner
violence in the town.
The German media gave
much coverage to the protest
and stressed that the dem-
onstration had not been au-
thorized.
Police appeared at the
scene to disperse the pro-
testers, detaining four of
them. Other Jewish activists
reacted by attacking the
police in an effort to free
their comrades.
In 1978, following the sign-
ing of the Egypt-Israel peace
agreement two years
previously, Prime Minister
Menahem Begin and Presi-
dent Anwar Sadat jointly
received the Nobel Peace
Prize.
