Splinter Groups Unite
In New Rabbinic Body

New York (JTA) — Swimm-
ing against the tide of
polarization among Ameri-
can Jewish religious
movements, two groups have
announced the formation of
a new rabbinic body that br-
ings together like-minded
traditional rabbis from the
nearest poles of the Conser-
vative and Orthodox
movements.
The Union for Traditional
Judaism, a right-wing
break-off from the Conser-
vative movement, has
agreed to unite with the
Fellowship of Traditional
Orthodox Rabbis, a group of
left-wing Orthodox rabbis, to
create a rabbinic body under
the auspices of the UTJ.

Rabbi Ronald Price, ex-
ecutive vice president of .
UTJ, said, "Through this
agreement we have taken a
major step toward unifying
the traditional halachic
community and marshaling
the resources available
therein, to teach open-
minded observant Judaism
to the entire Jewish com-
munity."
The essential feature of
the agreement, according to •
Rabbi Price, is the expansion
of the UTJ Rabbinic Services
Committee into a body that
will serve the broader pro-
fessional needs of all mem-
ber rabbis.
The new rabbinic group
will provide rabbis with
support services, including
continuing Torah education
programs, professional con-

ferences and other features
to be developed according to
the needs expressed by
members.
The outgoing president of
the FTOR and new co-
chairman of the UTJ rab-
binic group, Rabbi Mark 1
Kunis, said, "Now that
we're combined, we have a
much larger base of con-
gregations and rabbis, and
we'll be able to offer more
support for each other."

The Rabbinic Keness, as
the group is being called
temporarily, will "function
under the umbrella and as
part of the union," said
Rabbi Price.
Unlike the rabbinic
associations of the major
movements, the Keness will
not have its own administra-
tion separate from that of '
the union.
Rather, the Keness co-
chairmen will serve as
members of the Union board.
"That way, we can avoid the
duplication of things we've
seen in other groups, where
you essentially create a
series of institutions that
tend to compete with one an-
other," said Rabbi Price.
Both FTOR and UTJ are
splinter groups that brokr__:
away because of dissatisfac-
tion with major religious
movements.
The new organization, said
Rabbi Price, "bridges boun-
daries that were artificial to
begin with" between left<
wing Orthodox adherents
and right-wing Conser-
vatives.

Israeli Air Force
Makes Sea Rescue

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Two giant
Israeli air force helicopters
flew more than 600 miles
this week to rescue 10 pas-
sengers from a luxury yacht
which struck a reef in the
Red Sea, off the coast of
Sudan.
Eight Israeli crew mem-
bers of the Fantasy 11 re-
mained on board the listing
vessel to protect it against
piracy as they waited to be
towed for repairs to Sharm
el-Sheikh, at the southern
tip of Egyptian-controlled
Sinai, or to Eilat. The vessel
was taking on water but was
not in immediate danger as
Israeli, American and Fren-

ch passengers were lifted by
winches and pulled into the
helicopters.
The rescue was ordered at -
the topmost military level.

Prime Minister Yitzhak
Rabin, who also holds the
defense portfolio, and the
Israel Defense Force chief of
staff, Lt. Gen. Ehud Barak,
gave instructions for
evacuation of passengers
adrift 47 miles off a hostile
Sudanese coast.

Sudanese authorities were
undoubtedly aware of thel
rescue operation but did-J,
nothing either to help or to
interfere with it.
