sitting aside religious
differences, the
Reform and Conser-
vative synagogues of
Detroit have gotten together
in an'outreach effort to sin-
gle Jews.
Eight Shabbat services,
one per month from
November through June and
aimed specifically at in-
dividuals without lifetime
partners, will alternate bet-
ween Reform and Conser-
vative synagogues.
Temple Israel hosted the
first in the series Nov. 6.
According to Nancy Gad-
Harf, program coordinator
for Temple Israel, nearly 400
people filled the chapel.
Rabbis Paul Yedwab and
Harold Loss conducted the
Kabbalat Shabbat service.
The coordinator of the Sin-
gles Shabbat Service Pro-
gram, student rabbi Stacie
Schiff, did songleading.
After the service, Dr.
Sonya Friedman spoke to
the group about being single
and Jewish in the 1990s. A
question and answer period
and an Oneg Shabbat
followed.
"Response has been very
positive," Ms. Gad-Harf
said. "People stayed around
a long time talking. And
four people have gotten
together to make dates as a
result."
The idea for the services
came through the
brainstorming efforts of
many people as a way to
better address the different
needs of single Jews, Ms.
Gad-Harf said.
Funding from the Max M.
Fisher Foundation, in coop-
eration with the Michigan
Board of Rabbis, is making
possible a speaker at each
service. Although no names
were available, the com-
mittee is looking to host
speakers that will appeal to
an intelligent, interested
community on a variety of
subjects — not just being
single.
In addition, space permit-
ting, the singles services will
be conducted separately
from each synagogue's main
sanctuary.
"There are many reasons
for a separate service," Ms.

dress the needs and concerns

The services and speakers
will be aimed at individuals
in their 20s and 30s.
However, all singles are
welcome.
"The cooperative effort
between the Reform and
Conservative community is
really exciting and unique,"
Ms. Schiff said. "Joining the
