THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE ARE SINCE 1946 SINCE 1946 111171111 - : RU MONDAY NOW THR" French Jews Freed From German Jail Paris (JTA) — The three French Jews who were ar- rested and jailed in the German city of Rostock last week following a violent demonstration were released and returned to Paris. The release of the three, who were not identified, followed interventions by the European Jewish Con- gress to the authorities in Rostock as well as to the German Embassy in Paris. But Serge Cwajgenbaum, EJC secretary-general, said the three will probably have to be tried by a French court. The president of the EJC, Jean Kahn, refusing to either support or condemn the group's actions in Rostock, said that the idea of having three young French Jews imprisoned in Ger- many was "unbearable." The three were among a group of 46 French Jews, led by Nazi- hunter Serge Klarsfeld and his wife, Beate, who clashed with police on Oct. 19 while pro- testing Germany's failure to stem right-wing violence against foreigners, and its intention to deport Romanian Gypsies. The group had included former members of the Resistance and deportees among its ranks, but was mainly composed of youths belonging to the Betar Zionist group. They became involved in violent clashes with the Rostock police. The three arrested were indicted for brutal assault on police officers. The Jewish group's actions did not necessarily meet with the approval of the Jewish community. Jean Pierre-Bloch, 87, the outgo- ing president of the Interna- tional League against Racism and Anti-Semitism, firmly condemned the expe- dition to Rostock. "The democratic leader- ship of Rostock has nothing to do with fascism. Violence is something I have always condemned. Clubs and tear gas are not weapons to be used in an ideological con- frontation," he said, referr- ing to the helmets and tear gas the activists used in their struggle against the police. Meanwhile, Mr. Bloch, a veteran Jewish community leader, has been replaced as president of the Interna- tional League by Pierre Aidenbaum, 52. Program Supports Righteous Gentiles c New York (JTA) — The Anti- Defamation League has an- nounced the creation of a new program to honor and help the now-elderly Euro- peans who risked imprison- ment and even death to res- cue Jews during the Holo- caust. The Jewish Foundation for Christian Rescuers/ADL has established the Honor-a- Rescuer Program to enable synagogues, Jewish groups and churches to help the foundation provide monthly grants and financial assis- tance to more than 1,000 needy rescuers in 15 diff- erent countries in North America, Western and East- ern. Etu-ope. "They saved the -honor of humanity during this dark time and are owed the deepest gratitude from us all," said ADL national chairman Melvin Salberg. The new program was kicked off with the Ameri- can premier of A Day in Oc- tober, a film about the rescue of Danish Jews. In Poland and the former Soviet Union, where many rescuers live, the aid will help the needy among them to meet rising costs for food, rent and utilities, according to the foundation. For those rescuers who emigrated to the United States, contributions can be used for much-needed home care, health insurance premiums or basic living costs. Organizations or in- dividuals who participate in the program are given the name and address of a res- cuer whom they can call, write or visit.
