Tajik Jewry Marks Latest Exodus To Israel PHILIP SLOMOVITZ EDITOR EMERITUS I c i counzi Robin's Nest 7415 Orchard Loke Rd. West Bloomfield, MI Mon.-Sat. 10-6 Thursday 10-7 737-2666 Freedom You Can Depend On! here is no longer any- thing exceptionally new about another aliyah exodus to Israel. That's the Zionist role of rescuing oppressed Jews and redeeming them in the State of Israel. The newest Jewish achievement is now in process with the transfer of oppressed and disinfran- chised Jews of Tajik in the strife-ridden Muslim repub- lic of Tajikistan. This is an exceptional occurrence involving some 10,000 Jews to be redeemed who are to become halutzim in Israel. A great lesson is now being assured in the redemption. Historical cer- tainties were outlined in the following: The former Soviet re- public has been racked with internecine violence. Some 10,000 of the coun- try's 12,400 Jews have fil- ed applications to im- migrate to Israel .. . Unlike in other Asian areas of the former Soviet Union, the majority of the Jews in Tajikistan are Ashkenazim. This occurrence em- phasizes the human needs that keep the new exodus continuing. Call 354-6060 The lion is being com- memorated by Israel and is now assuming a wider international role. Here is a revelation from the World Jewish Congress news com- pilation: The Tel Aviv Safari has sent 10 of its lions, all born in captivity, to South Africa to help ease a re- ported shortage of the of the animal in its natural habitat. The lions were sent by sea to a private farm in South Africa, where they are to be raised. This encourages delving into a historically inspired theme. It calls our attention to a role of significance in Jewish symbolism. We read in Gateway to Judaism : In the Book of Genesis, one of Jacob's sons, Judah, is compared to a lion. (49:9) In the course of Israel's history, Judah's name was used to designate the entire coun- try of Palestine. The lion decoration has long been popular in Orthodox syn- agogues, with this motif appearing on the Ark cur- tain and on Torah Mantles. A quotation from Ethics of the Fathers (5:23) " be bold as a leopard, light as an eagle, swift as a deer, and strong as a lion to do the will of your Father who is in heaven," has prompted some synagogues to use the deer, also, to decorate the Ark. This is not only a role for the lion. It becomes a power- ful Jewish concept. Fur- thermore, it is interna- tionalized with the link bet- ween Israel and Africa. Here is another glorious associ- ation for the Jewish state. Is It Bashert For Politicians? Bashert — destiny, is a Yiddishism for self- comforting preservation perhaps inapplicable in any other language. Whatever happens in Jew- ish life, the afflicted almost always console themselves with "Es iz bashert." This can be serious and painful or it might be in a happy mood or glorifying something predestined and a mark of the honor with which it is accepted. If destiny could always be anticipated, could this become a self-healing spiri- tual sentiment for mankind? This question is posed at this time, three days after our very important election, the results of which may affect all mankind. Could the victor and the defeated join in a bashert recognition of destiny? This is surely too difficult to expect, especially in an election. Meanwhile, with many slautes to our presi- dent-elect, we retain the admiration and comfort of the remarkable symbolism of bashert. Myron Steinberg So inexhaustible were the personal and family gifts of Myron Steinberg, who died Oct. 22 at the age of 93, that innumerable tributes will be registered in his life's record. One of the most productive leaders in the printing in- dustry, Myron Steinberg was recognized as having led to the introduction of many improvements in it. His communal devotion exhibited distinctive leader- ship. He continued the ideal- ism of his parents in devo- tion to Zionism. A pioneer in the Michigan Magen David Adom, he recently shared in co-establishing the John Mames Chapter. As a co-founder of Temple Israel, he attained leader- ship in our religious com- munity. Myron Steinberg shared immensely with his brother Morris in the advancement of chess and checker movements in our commun- ity, giving encouragement to Sammy Rashevsky when he became a chess champion. Tributes to Myron Steinberg would become en- cyclopedic if his many gifts to other causes, especially music and art, were to be enumerated. As one of our notable citizens, Myron Steinberg will remain mem- orable. 0 n Kosher Fight In Denmark Copenhagen (JTA) — The Jewish community here is fighting back an assault by an animal rights group on the practice of kosher slaughter. Religious requirements prohibit acquiescence to a demand that animals be stunned before ritual slaughter, or shechitah, as it is called in Hebrew. The de- mand was put forward by the Danish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. (J) c =-;
