Chana worked finding food
for more than a year until
her two comrades, who
guarded the entrance to and
from the ghetto as Chana
dragged the food in, were
shot. It happened just as
Chana was making her way
through their secret
passage; guard dogs had
heard them whisper their
secret code word.
Perhaps Chana's most
difficult time in the ghetto
was when her grandmother
died of typhus. "We couldn't
just leave her body on the

doing, to be taken away in
the morning on a wagon,"
Mrs. Avrutsky says. "So late
at night, I wrapped her body
and carried her over my
shoulder. I found a place for
her between two houses. Oh,
I loved her so much.
"Then I came back and
told my mother where my
grandmother was. 'After the
war,' I said, 'we'll come back
and give her a real burial.' "
Meanwhile, Meir
Mandelberger had managed
to secure false identity pa-
pers for his family. Chana
kept her papers with her
always, in a small leather
bag she wore around her
neck. She would have the
chance to use them in 1943,
when she walked through
more than a mile of neck-
high underground canals to
her escape.
Her mother, sister and
Chana had had enough of
the Warsaw Ghetto. "But
my father was so frightened,
so terrified, so sick in his
soul. He just couldn't do it,"
Mrs. Avrutsky says. Sarah
hoped her husband would
see Chana's success, then be
inspired himself to leave.
It would never happen.
Chana managed to stay
with a gentile acquaintance
of the family, where she liv-
ed for weeks alone in a secret
room. But then the man
turned her out, telling her
his neighbors suspected he
was hiding a Jew.
"But where will I go?" she
pleaded.
"I'll give you a little
money," he said. "You'll
have to walk around and
find something for yourself."
Instead, Chana, then 11,
decided to go back to her
parents.
"Let me in! Let me in! I'm
a Jew and I want to get into
the ghetto!" she cried, tear-
ing through the Polish, Nazi
and Jewish guards at the
ghetto's gates.
"You stupid girl," one
guard said, kicking her.
"Why do you want to get
in?" And she was forbidden
entry.
For hours on end, Chana
sat alone on the steps of a
Polish home just outside the
ghetto. "I was waiting to see
my parents," she says. "I
was afraid to move."
When she finally got up, it
was to wander. For three
days she roamed the streets
of Warsaw. "I had no more
bread, no more energy." She
spent her nights in a garden.
On the third day it was
pouring. Looking to get out
of the rain, Chana approach-
ed a large building, where
she huddled under the tiny
roof of the St. Ursula nun-
nery. There, she fell asleep.
Chana woke to a soft cloth
being pressed against her
face. Someone, she realized,
was cleaning her face. A nun
