New York (JTA) —
America's largest voluntary
refugee resettlement agency
has decided to take action in
response to the decline in
U.S. government support for
refugee resettlement and
what the group sees as a
parallel increase in anti-
immigrant sentiment
nationwide.
The New York Association
for New Americans recently
launched a national search
for its former clients, the
first step in its plan to create
a refugee-advocacy and as-
sistance organization run by
NYANA alumni.
Since its founding in 1949,
NYANA has helped to reset-
tle more than 400,000 refu-
gees from 40 different coun-
tries as diverse as the former
Soviet Union, Poland, Cuba,
Ethiopia, Vietnam, Tibet,
Hungary, Cambodia and
Egypt.
The responsibilities of the
proposed NYANA alumni
association include ad-
vocating enlightened immi-
grant admission policies and
adequate resettlement fun-
ding and serving newcomers
directly by employing them
or helping them find jobs.
Alumni would also help in
lobbying industries to
employ immigrants, provide
scholarships and other edu-
cational opportunities and
serve as mentors or advisers.
Former NYANA clients
and relatives interested in
the alumni association
should contact Alice
Adesman at NYANA, 800-
775-3364.
