Rabin Denies
Withdrawal

Jerusalem (JTA) — Prime
Minister Yitzhak Rabin has
angrily denied reports that
Israel is holding out to Syria
the possibility of full
withdrawal from the Golan
Heights.
Mr. Rabin labeled untrue a
report that Israeli negotiator
Itamar Rabinovich told the
Syrians Israel "does not rule
out" a full withdrawal from
the strategic plateau.
The prime minister told
the Cabinet he spoke after
telephoning the professor-
turned-diplomat in Wash-
ington overnight to double-
check the story in the Labor-
affiliated newspaper Davar.
He labeled the report by dip-
lomatic correspondent
Menachem Shalev
"irresponsible."
As Mr. Rabin spoke, scores
of Golan residents demon-
strated outside the Prime
Minister's Office against the
land-for-peace proposals
offered by the Israeli delega-
tion at the peace talks in
Washington.

Groups Urge
Tougher Action

Washington (JTA) —
Mindful of parallels to the
Holocaust, American Jewish
groups are stepping up their
public campaign for tougher
action against alleged Ser-
bian atrocities in the former
Yugoslav republic of Bosnia-
Herzegovina.
In a resolution adopted
earlier this week, the gover-
ning council of the American
Jewish Congress urged Pres-
ident Bush to "take the lead
in galvanizing the interna-
tional community to put a
stop to the outrages" occurr-
ing in the former Yugoslav
republic.
It urged the U.S. govern-
ment to help mobilize inter-
national support for the
"limited use of force in the
form of surgical air strikes
against specific strategic
targets," noting that "no
compelling arguments" had
been advanced against such
a policy.
The resolution also urged
U.N. adoption of several
measures, including the
promotion of an immediate
cease-fire, the enforcement
of the current ban on
military flights over Bos-
nian territory and the lifting
of the arms embargo against
Bosnia.
