The Sichels

Israel Bonds
Honors Sichels

The Congregation of
Moses Men's Club and the
Kalamazoo Committee for
State of Israel Bonds will host
a breakfast reception in honor
of Beatrice and Werner Sichel
10 a.m. Nov. 15 at the
synagogue, 2501 Stadium
Drive, Kalamazoo. The
Sichels will receive the
"Israel Freedom Award" for
their dedication to the Jewish
community and State of
Israel. Educator and his-
torian Dr. Isaac Alteras will
be the speaker.
Beatrice Sichel is the head
librarian of the Physical
Sciences Library at Western
Michigan University. In addi-
tion to her work with Israel
Bonds, she has served on the
Holocaust Remembrance
Committee of Kalamazoo. She
was also responsible for the
1991 Israel Independence
Day program.
Werner Sichel is a professor
and chairman of the depart-
ment of economics at Western
Michigan University. Pro-
fessor Werner also is past
president of both the Econo-
mics Society of Michigan and
the Midwest Business Econo-
mics Association.
Dr. Alteras has been a lec-
turer in the history depart-
ment and Adult Collegiate
Education program at
Queens College for more than
10 years. He teaches courses
on medieval and modern
Jewish history, Zionism and
modern Israel.

Beth Shalom
Hosts Families

Congregation Beth Shalom
families will host a Shabbat
dinner Oct. 30 for more than
a dozen new American

families connected recently
with the synagogue.
The gathering is part of a
program of Jewish Ex-
periences For Families, which
matches participating
synagogues and temples with
all the newcomers who arrive
in a particular month. The
congregations are responsible
for reaching out to the new
American families, connec-
ting them with members and
involving the newcomers in
the congregational activities.

congregations, organizations
and individuals to participate

YI Sets
Shabbaton

Young Israel of West Bloom-
field will hold a Shabbaton
November 6 and 7 to meet
candidates for the rabbinic
position of Young Israel.
Rabbi Mordecai Wolmark,
the executive director of
Merkaz, will be the guest rab-
bi for this Shabbaton. The
program will include an Oneg
Shabbat on Friday evening, a
Shabbat morning D'var
Torah on Parshat Lech Lecha,
kiddush, shiur before Shab-
bat Minchah and Seudah
Shlishit with discussion. For

Science Scholar
Sets Lectures

Dr. Gerald Schroeder,
author of Genesis And The
Big Bang: The Discovery of
Harmony Between Modern
Science And The Bible, will
speak at various - locations
Oct. 29-Nov. 1. Dr. Schroeder
has been a scientific adviser
for many countries.
The schedule for the lec-
tures is: Oct.. 29, 8 p.m. at
Bais Ya'akov — the topic was
"Perception of Conflict Bet-
ween Torah and Science";
Oct. 30 at 8:30 p.m., an Oneg
Shabbat will be held at Con-
gregation Mogen Avraham;
Dr. Schroeder will discuss
"Science: Myths and Facts."
Oct. 31 at 8:30 p.m. there will
be a Melava Malka at Con-
gregation Ohel Moed; the
topic will be "The Age of the
Universe." There is a fee. NOV.
1 at 8 p.m. Dr. Schroeder will
discuss "The Origin of Life";
there is a fee.
