Hear Speakers

At a dedication ceremony, Esther Applebaum and Gordon Ryback display the
ARMDI Maimonides Award presented to them by the Dr. John J. Mames
Chapter-Michigan Region American Red Magen David for Israel. This award
was given in appreciation for the ambulance in memory of parents, Sol and
Rose Ryback. Manny Charach, chairman of the Michigan Region, made the
presentation.

Endowment Fund
Plans Seminars

Edward Jay Beckwith, ex-
pert in the areas of the
management and distribu-
tion of personal wealth, will
headline three seminars on
charitable giving Nov. 19 at
the Max M. Fisher Building.
Sponsored by the Federated
Endowment Fund of the
Jewish Federation, the
gatherings are organized by
the Fund's Professional Ad-
visory, Steering and Women's
Endowment committees.
An expert in business, tax
and property law, Mr.
Beckwith also advises on the
application of tax laws to
family and business financial
arrangements. A partner in
the law firm of Baker &
Hostetler in Washington,
D.C., he represents charitable
and other exempt organiza-
tions, health care institutions
and trade associations.
Achieving tax planning ob-
jectives through the practical
use of charitable remainder
trusts will be Mr. Beckwith's
topic at the FEF Professional
Advisory Committee's annual
seminar, "Charitable Giving:
Big Business — Big Benefits."
CLE and CPE credits will be
available for the 4 p.m.
gathering, which includes
cocktails and hors d'oeuvres.
Mr. Beckwith will discuss
"Planned Giving: Innovative
Gifts — Big Benefits" at the
12:15 p.m. FEF leadership
luncheon, organized by the
Steering Committee.

Charitable Giving for the
Contemporary Woman" will
be the focus of his talk before

ACLU Head
Gives Talk

Howard Simon, executive
director of the American Civil
Liberties Union (ACLU), will
present "Do the Elections Af-
fect the Bill of Rights?" for
the Institute for Retired Pro-
fessionals 12:45 p.m. Nov. 5 at
the Maple-Drake building.
This lecture is one of a
series offered throughout the
year by IRP and is open to the
public.

U.S. Senator Carl Levin will
reflect on Election '92 at a
dinner on behalf of the Allied
Jewish Campaign 6:30 p.m.
Nov. 16 at the home of David
and Doreen Hermelin.
The gathering, sponsored by
the Jewish Federation Young
Adult Division, is for con-
tributors of $2,500 or more to
the 1993 Campaign.
Elected in 1978 as the first
Jewish senator from
Michigan, Sen. Levin is now
in his third term. He serves
on the Armed Services,
Governmental Affairs and
Small Business committees.
A native Detroiter, he serv-
ed on the Detroit City Coun-
cil for 10 years, the last six as
Council president.

Joyce Miller, who broke the
Operation Solomon story for
National Public Radio while
accompanying hundreds of
Ethiopian Jews on one of the
last C-130 Hercules military
transports out of Addis Ababa
in May 1991, will address a
gathering on behalf of the
Allied Jewish Campaign, 6
p.m. Nov. 12 at the home of
Myrna Partrich.
The dinner, sponsored by
the Hatikvah Section of the
Jewish Federation Business
and Professional Women's
Division, is for contributors of
$500 or more to the 1993
Campaign.
A field staff member of the
American Association for
Ethiopian Jews, Ms. Miller
was one of the few Americans
to witness and participate in
the year-long odyssey of

Carl Levin

Ethiopia's Jews leading up to
their exodus. She lived and
worked in Addis Ababa dur-
ing this time.

Ann Arbor Hosts
Biennial Conference

The Northeast Lakes Coun-
cil regional biennial con-
ference titled "The Quest of
Reform Judaism: Spirit, Com-
mitment, Action" will be Nov.
6-8 in Ann Arbor, hosted by
Temple Beth Emeth.
This weekend of spiritual
renewal will feature Rabbi
Lawrence Kushner, Con-
gregation Beth El, Sudbury,
Mass.; Rabbi Daniel Syme,
senior vice president, Union
of American Hebrew Con-
gregations; Albert Vorspan,
immediate past senior vice
president of UAHC; Dr.
Sherry Blumberg, professor,
Hebrew Union College, New
York; Rabbi Arnold Sher,
director of the Joint Place-
ment Commission; and Dr.
Gary Tobin, professor,
Brandeis University, Wal-
tham, Mass.
The conference will begin
with registration at the Holi-
day Inn West, Ann Arbor. Dr.
Blumberg will present the
luncheon keynote address,
"The Whole Earth Is Full Of
God's Glory: Paths On Our
Reform Spiritual Journey." In
addition to discussion groups
that day, there will be a din-
ner and Shabbat service with
an address from Rabbi Daniel
Syme.
Nov. 7 will include a morn-
ing Shabbat service with a
lecture from Dr. Gary Tobin

titled "Creating a Spiritual
Community." Also on the
agenda that day is a luncheon
with Albert Vorspan presen-
ting the Shabbat keynote ad-
dress, "Tough Choices: The
New Social Justice Dilem-
mas." In addition to afternoon
seminars, Saturday's pro-
gram includes a dinner
followed by Kol B'Seder,
Jewish musical duo. The con-
ference will end with an ad-

dress from scholar and author
Rabbi Lawrence Kushner,
"Renewing the Spirit, the
Congregation and Creation."

Alyn Hospital
Hosts Event

Detroit Friends of Alyn
Hospital will host their an-
nual fund-raiser 7:30 p.m.
Nov. 11 at the home of Sondra
Berlin.
The speakei' will be author,
poet and lecturer Danny
Siegel. In addition, a special
tribute will be paid to Rae
Ann Sharfman for her dedica-
tion to Alyn Hospital.
Arthur Horwitz and
Miriam Goldberg chair the
event. On the host committee
