ity in fulfillment of those
values, but never to usurp
the temporal authority un-
to themselves.
There is something addi-
tional for which we are to be
deeply grateful in Dr.
Rackman's lesson. He
touched on a subject which
contained a serious differen-
tiation in our existence as a
spiritual entity. It is a sub-
ject the practice of which
was rejected by a minimal
number of Jews, especially
the reform Jewish rab-
binate.
The State of Israel does
not have a law that coerces
parents to circumcise all
males born to Jewish
mothers. Parents are free
to do as they please. Yet
almost all obey the man-
date of the spiritual
authority. There is no con-
flict. There is no coercion.
What the spiritual author-
ity mandates is fulfilled
without the force of the
temporal authority.
With regard to family
law, however, the situation
is exactly the opposite. The
spiritual authority enjoys a
,ANTIQUE
monopoly on domestic
relations. The result is
disastrous. The law is
hated; those in charge of
the law are hated; the
Torah is maligned; extor-
tion and blackmail are
rampant.
For 50 years I tried my
best to defend the system
in the interest of Jewish
unity. But I now find the
price is too great. And the
cause of unity is not
advanced.
Before it is too late, the
situation must be given
another look. A full revi-
sion is in order. The
spiritual authority owes it
to its own principles to
make it.

humanism and democracy!
It is especially important to

Germany To Ban
Certain Groups
Bonn (JTA) — Germany's
interior minister has or-
dered the federal office that
monitors extremist political
activities to examine the
possibility of banning a
number of neo- Nazi organ-
izations.
The spokesman for
Interior Minister Rudolf
Seiters said here that the
examination would par-
ticularly look into groups
that have been heavily in-
volved in the recent wave of
violence against foreigners.
Eckart Werthebach, the
president of the monitoring
office, called the Ver-
fassungsschutz, has, mean-
while, publicly called for a
ban on a number of such
organizations.
This attitude, which repre-
sents a shift in the office's
policy, was expressed in
several interviews and ap-
pears geared to head off
criticism by the Jewish
community and other
groups.
While refraining from
naming the organizations to
be harmed, Mr. Werthebach
said recent intelligence in-
formation suggests that
more and more coordination
took place among extremist
neo-Nazi groups and the
Republican Party.
The Republican Party, led
by a former SS officer, is an
established political party
with representation in the
European Parliament and in
several German state
parliaments.
Mr. Werthebach also said
no decision has been made
on whether the Republicans
should be monitored by his
office.
Such monitoring arouses
concern among right-wing
politicians, who fear that
people who vote for the
Republicans would be per-
suaded to switch their
allegiance to more middle-of-
the-road parties.
According to recent
statistics, the number of
clashes between far-right
and far-left extremist groups
in Germany has increased
dramatically in the past
year. More than 230 such
violent clashes have been
registered so far this year,
Mr. Werthebach reported.
