Southeast Michigan's Leader In Mortgage Lending 1533 North Woodward, Suite 140 Bloomfield Hills, Michigan 48304 ith the presidential campaign down to its final days, Jew- ish activists in both major parties are working frantically to squeeze out every last Jewish vote. Jewish Republicans are blitzing key states, trying to break what seems to be Bill Clinton's iron grip on the vast majority of Jewish votes. Former Minnesota Sen. Rudy Boschwitz, who has campaigned tirelessly for the beleaguered Bush- Quayle ticket, whizzed through Ohio, Illinois, Pen- nsylvania, Michigan and New Jersey — all important electoral states where Jew- ish votes could make a dif- ference. Jack Stein, Gordon Zacks and Max Fisher — the Big Three among Jewish Repub- licans — have been hot on Mr. Boschwitz's heels in re- cent days. And Dennis Ross, a former policy planning chief at the State Department and a primary architect of the Middle East peace talks, hit the campaign trail in New Jersey and Florida. Mr. Ross met this week with leaders of Agudath Israel of America, the polit- ically active Orthodox group. Agudath Israel leaders earlier heard about Gov. Clinton's virtues from Sen. Joe Lieberman, D- Conn., the only Orthodox Jew in the Senate. In recent days, Democrats have targeted ads in Wisconsin and Illinois specifically at Jewish voters. Also, outgoing Rep. Stephen Solarz, who is re- portedly on the short list to be United Nations ambas- sador if Gov. Clinton wins — recently appeared at a Clin- ton-Gore rally in Philadelphia. Stuart Eizenstat, Pres. Jimmy Carter's former do- mestic affairs adviser and another probable member of a Clinton administration, has lobbied hard for Jewish votes in Chicago. And Morrie Amitay, a former chief of the American Israel Public Affairs Com- mittee, appeared before Or- thodox groups in Maryland. "The response from the Jewish community is much more than we expected," Rudy Boschwitz: Stumping for Bush-Quayle. Sen. Joe Lieberman: Hustling for Clinton-Gore. said a top member of Gov. Clinton's Jewish outreach team. "We're just about out of literature and buttons. We've had so many requests for materials in these last weeks that we can't possibly keep up with them." Siegman: U.S. Help Bosnia As the horrifying situation in Bosnia continues to appall the Jewish community, American Jewish Congress director, Henry Siegman, met this week with State Department and White House officials, urging a more active U.S. role in stopping the carnage. The AJCongress has "been pushing this issue con- sistently," he said. "We say there has to be an end to the arms embargo and that we have to provide Bosnians with the arms they need to defend themselves. The em- bargo acts in a tragically unbalanced way." Mr. C.
