her more articulate and reasoned and as
having a more detailed grasp of the issues
than her Democratic challenger."

tended services in Little
Rock, Ms. Ehrman said.
The Clinton-Gore cam-
paign has held exclusive
press conferences for the
Jewish media, and a tele-
conference across the coun-
try for members of the Jew-
ish community to ask ques-
tions. Though he could not
attend the conference, Mr.
Clinton addressed B'nai
'',, B'rith's annual convention
via satellite.
'-'' In addition, running mate
1 Al Gore spoke with Jewish
( 'Th delegates for the American-
Israel Public Affairs Com-
mittee at the Democratic
-,, National Convention in New
York.
"Gov. Clinton is surround-
ed by Jewish advisers, which
is certainly not true of the
Bush campaign," Ms.
Ii
`Ehrman said.
In the letter, Mr. Fisher

credited Mr. Bush with br-
inging the Arabs and
Israelis together to the peace
table for the first time. Mr.
Clinton and running mate
Al Gore also credit Mr. Bush
for this accomplishment.
Mr. Fisher did not address
in his letter Mr. Bush's
withholding of $10 billion in
loan guarantees for Israel,
which angered many mem-
bers of the American Jewish
community.
Mr. Fisher accused Mr.
Clinton and the Democratic
Party of waffling on issues
like opposition to the Gulf
War in the Middle East.
"The peace process was a
direct result of the Gulf
War," Mr. Fisher said. "The
Democrats can not have it
both ways. You can not say,
`The peace process is good,
but I oppose the Gulf
War.' "

Local Rabbis Express
Support For Pollard

ELIZABETH APPLEBAUM Ass STANT ED TOR

undreds of rabbis
from throughout the
country — including
four from the Detroit
area — are expressing sup-
, port for commuting the
Sentence of Jonathan Jay
Pollard.
"We, the undersigned
rabbis, representative of the
<Dbroad spectrum of the Jew-
ish religious community,
wish to voice our plea for
_justice for Jonathan
Pollard," begins a full-page
ad, addressed to President
George Bush, that appeared

"The lifetime
sentence is
unduly harsh."

last week in the New York
Times.
While not condoning the
actions of Mr. Pollard, who
was convicted of spying for
Israel, "we nonetheless call
upon you, Mr. President, to
recognize that the lifetime
sentence imposed upon
Jonathan Pollard is unduly
harsh and grossly inconsis-
tent with the punishment
given to other Americans
convicted of similar and
even worse crimes."
Local signatories to the
letter are Rabbis M. Robert
Syme, Harold Loss and Paul
Yedwab of Temple Israel,
and Congregation Beth

Achim Rabbi Emeritus
Milton Arm.
The ad was purchased by
Amcha-Coalition for Jewish
Concerns, headed by Rabbi
Avi Weiss of New York. It
sends the message that "the
grassroots community con-
siders Pollard a great priori-
ty," Rabbi Weiss said.
Rabbi Weiss said he found
signatories for the ad, which
will soon appear in other pa-
pers throughout the country,
with the help of leading Or-
thodox, Conservative,
Reform and Reconstruc-
tionist bodies throughout
the country. The organiza-
tions contacted their mem-
bers and asked for support.
Rabbis Norman Lamm,
head of Yeshiva University;
Ismar Schorsch, chancellor
of the Jewish Theological
Seminary; Alfred Gott-
schalk, president of Hebrew
Union College-Jewish In-
stitute of Religion; and Ar-
thur Green, president of the
Reconstructionist Rab-
binical College all signed the
ad.
Meanwhile, a program
featuring Dr. Morris
Pollard, Jonathan's father,
will be held 7:30 p.m. Nov.
19 at Temple Israel. The
event is being co-sponsored
by Temple Israel, Adat
Shalom Synagogue, Temple
Shir Tikvah, B'nai B'rith
and the Detroit chapter of
the Zionist Organization of
America. ❑
