Bosnia and its horrors seems
far away. The prime minister
of Croatia and vice president
of the Jewish community c;
were chatting in the lobby.
Long-time Israeli politician
Josef Burg chatted with Croa-
tian parliamentarians. JDC
president Sylvia Hassenfeld,
who had flown in for the open-
ing, broke bread with am-
bassadors while diplomats
and ministers were scattered
throughout.
And on the top floor,
Yugoslavia's last president,
Stipe Mesic, was sitting
sround the youth club's table,
sipping wine and chatting
with the teen-agers.
Srdan Matic, the center
s 29-year-old executive vice
president, was beaming. "We
wanted a community center
that would
would make Jews want
to come here. Before the war,
this was one of the richest
Jewish communities in
Europe, but afterwards, with
no funds, this building
became sadder and sadder."
Then he smiled as his eyes
combed the room. "To us, this
is a dream."
Josef Burg smiled at that.
"To dream," he quipped ; "i5
part of reality!',.

primarily emphasizing men
who served as fliers in the
European Theater.
Michael Moscow is in-
terested in obtaining photos
of and information about an
aviator from Detroit who died
in 1944. He was Captain
Noah Lewin-Epstein, a
fighter pilot in the 514th
Fighter Squadron of the
406th Fighter Group.
