We Urge Fellow Voters To

Siegman also told ad-
ministration officials that
the U.S. has to be more will-
ing to use military force, if
that is the only way to pro-
tect Bosnian civilians from
further horrors.
Mr. Siegman plans to
make the same pitch next
week when he meets with
\ ,Cyrus Vance, the special
United Natins Envoy in
,D Yugoslavia.
‘_, The U.S. Jewish commun-
' — ity, he said, has responded
positively to his group's
efforts.
, "Some," he said, "are
always saying, 'Why are you
doing this for Muslims?" Or,
, 'The Croats had such a
terrible record during World
War II.' But the Jewish
) community is overwhelm-
) „ ingly anguished over what is
, taking place, and it wants to
L see something done about
it."

Surge In
Jewish Voters

Something strange is hap-
pening in these final days of
the 1992 presidential
sweepstakes: A surge of
voter registration may belie
predictions of a low turnout.
And the Jewish commun-
ity is doing more than its
- -- Share.
) "We're very pleased with
what we've accomplished,"
--said Irving Silverman, head
of the Synagogue Council of
America's (SCA) Commun-
ity Mobilization Voter
'Registration Campaign. "By
our best estimate, we
I registered at least 200,000
_,, Jews. And that's probably a
conservative estimate."
Through about 46 Jewish
federations and community
c, relations councils, SCA con-
tacted more than 500,000
> households with
unregistered voters. Vol-
unteers worked the phones,
went door-to-door and set up
tables at shopping centers.
o Hundreds of synagogues
distributed voter registra-
tion material at High Holi-
day services.
SCA also targeted Ameri-
can Jews living in Israel.
After the election, SCA
, plans to develop additional
programs to reach hundreds
of thousands of Jews who
have not yet responded to its
plea.
According to the conven-
tional wisdom, increases in
voter registration tend to
" help Democrats. And since
Jews vote overwhelmingly
Democratic, the 200,000
Jews registered through the
SCA's efforts should give
Bill Clinton a big boost.
