DETROIT'S HIGHEST RATES Shemi Exhibition At Circle Gallery A comprehensive exhibition of the work of Calman Shemi, Israeli artist, is at Circle Gallery, the Somerset Collec- tion, 2801 W. Big Beaver Road, Troy. It is dedicated to Bet Shira Congregation in South Dade County, Fla., a synagogue devastated by Hurricane Andrew. Through Nov. 8, Circle Gallery has pledged a portion of the sales of the artist's work to aid in the reconstruc- tion process. Thirty Circle Galleries in cities from coast to coast and in Toronto are participating in this effort. The artist himself is presen- ting a small collection of his work to the congregation. His semi-abstract style con- y ys his vision of life and nature in an explosion of col- or. This exhibition features Mr. Shemi's soft paintings, painted sculpture, litho- graphs and works on canvas and paper. His unusual process of meshing the fabrics one to another and to the back- ground permits him to achieve an effect of transparency that suggests light. His motifs are from nature and are filled with the colors of his childhood Argentina and the landscapes of his home in Israel. Circle Gallery will donate 15 percent of proceeds from sales to Bet Shira Congregation. GIFTS What's the best gift your child ever gave you (besides grandchildren!)?
