that glow in the dark after Mom and Dad turn
off the lights.
Goslin, who has named his New York de-
sign firm Morningstar Studio, silk-screens his
prints by hand in a variety of style combina-
tions. He changes colors, textures and repeats
to suit a client and takes commissions for cus-
tom designs, as well. His standardpatterns
arepriced between $40 and $70 a roll (five
yards, about 27 inches wide).
Because most wallpaper is busier in design
than plain painted walls, designers rarely have
the nerve to use it in the living room. But there
are increasing numbers of papers that offer
more texture and depth than pattern, echo-
ing the strong interest in faux finishes and
sponged, striated or ragged paint finishes.
Jonal, a design concern just off Madison Av-
enue on Manhattan's Upper East Side (212-
879-9200) , sells a hand-painted canvas that
puts texture into seemingly solid color. Ap-
plied just like wallpaper, the canvas has a rich
but J4
subtle marbleized design, and it hides
crevices and other defects in walls. A luxury
product manufactured for durability and
priced at $90 to $125 per foot (in a nine-foot
width), the canvas is easily cleaned and can
be removed and reused.
While anything from maps to photo col-
lages can be laminated to walls, there are good
reasons to stick to commercial wall coverings.
Most of today's wallpapers, even the most ex-
pensive ones, are vinyl-coated. "They can be
wiped clean with a damp cloth. Even grass-
cloth or string paper can be coated with a
stain-resistant finish. Manufacturers say they
make heavy vinyl lines for kitchens and bath-
rooms only because customers think they
need them.
Best of all, wallpaper is no longer a lifetime
commitment In the old days, wallpaper left
such a mess on a wall when it was removed
that heavy labor was required to scrape a wall
back into paintable condition. Now if the pa-
per is marked 'strippable' and you use the cor-
rect paste for each paper, you should not have
any trouble removing the paper.
That's a stroke of luck Great-Grandmoth-
er didn't have. Ell
