A fireplace with a dancing fire lends
a cozy feeling to any home, especially
on a cold, blustery day. Here are some
safety tips from your local fire
departments:
Keep tight-fitting screens or glass
doors in front of fireplace openings to
prevent sparks from flying out. Keep
papers, furniture and other things
that might burn at least three feet
from the front of the fireplace. Don't
leave children alone in a room where
a fire is burning. And never burn a fire
while you are out or asleep.
A wood-burning heating system or
device should be safe, economical, and
easy to use. Have your system install-
ed by a reputable professional and
make sure your system is UL or FM
approved and installed as stated in the
manufacturer's instructions.
Although proper installation can
help prevent a fire, know what to do
if one does happen. Know the signs of
a chimney fire: a loud roar, sucking
sounds and shaking pipes. Make sure
your entire family knows what to do.
If you think you have a chimney fire,
cut off the fire's air supply by shutting
any air intake vents in the fire box.
Close the damper. Everyone should
leave the house immediately and call
the fire department.
Dispose of ashes by placing them in
metal containers, never in paper or
plastic bags or cardboard boxes. Ashes
can hold enough heat to start a fire for
several days. Wet the ashes and make
sure they are cold.

Winter Tips

Although fall is an ideal time to
garden, many gardeners should take
a few moments and prepare for the
winter season. Here are two tips to
think about:
Fall is an excellent time to test
winter power equipment. Better safe
than sorry once the snow sets in.
Try not to use ice-melting pellets on
sidewalks or driveways where the
snow will eventually be shoveled or
blown into the yard. The salt residue
can damage the lawn. I
