All About Floors by Michael Daneker When Edgar Allen Poe wrote in The Raven that embers turned to ghosts on his floor, he probably didn't think too much about the damage they did to his finish. But then, after perusing the House of Usher, an astute reader might surmise that Poe wasn't the world's biggest home fixer-upper. Nevertheless (or should one say nev- ermore), after writing The Raven, Poe has some work to do on his floors. Did he go with a tiled floor so that future em- bers would do less damage, or did he stain and refinish the wood floor he al- ready had? It is unlikely that Poe, with his unusual creativity, did something ordinary. Unlike today's shoppers, Poe, did not face a bewildering variety of flooring op- tions. Most floors in the 19th Century were made of wood.
