Brunschwig & Fils sleeper sofa, with Gustav Stickley
accent chairs, end tables, coffee tables and lounge
chair. Above a games table is a signed Gustav Stickley
willow light fixture, hanging like a basket. The entire
room is accented by American Indian figurines of
Kachina dolls and Acoma bowls which Mr. Goldman
purchased for the owners in Washington, D.C.
Heading up the stairs to the master suite, the
celadon walls continue, along with a rich, deep green
carpet anchored with brass stair rods. The upper land-
ing features a whole library with floor-to-ceiling book-
cases with drawers. At the end, by a window, is a small
Sheraton bench in wood with a painted oval and a
comfortable cushion, just the spot to peruse a bit of
Shakespeare.
The master bedroom features a celadon and white
striped wallpaper by the Ralph Lauren Home
Collection, white lace drapery and a floral upholstered
headboard and matching duvet from a coordinating
fabric by Ralph Lauren. Fabric and lace pillows top the
bed, creating a romantic spot. Mr. Goldman designed a
cabinet and a large pine armoire, providing a rustic
respite from the flowers and lace. A wood French coun-

try desk features family photos and a large bust of
Verdi, the Italian composer.
The master bath features white Italian marble, with
two sinks, brass hardware and a large whirlpool tub. A
beautiful Persian rug provides a burst of color in deep
reds, blues and ivories. Boxwood topiaries with dried
roses are displayed near the large tub. The English flo-
ral bedroom fabric continues in the bathroom wallpa-
per, valances and window swags. A large shower and
toilet area are set off to one side.
Down the hall is a whimsical guest room, inspired by
children's book illustrations. "It all has to do with their
love of rabbits," says Mr. Goldman. There are framed
rabbit posters featuring Max, of children's book fame, a
whimsical papier mache rabbit head, and rabbits and
vines have been hand-painted onto a glazed white
background on the wood furniture headboard and
night stands. A coordinating rabbit and vine
Brunschwig & Fils wallpaper borders the adjacent
bathroom.
"The townhouse looks like a townhouse in New
York," says Mr. Goldman, echoing Mr. Saroki's goal.
But it's in Birmingham, instead. ❑
