New Exhibit
At Robert Kidd

An exhibition of new pain-
tings by Roy Slade and
DeLoss McGraw and sculp-
ture and prints by James
Surls is appearing at Robert
Kidd Gallery and will con-
tinue through Nov. 14.
Roy Slade's paintings deal
with his concern with spatial
abstraction. Mr. Slade
manipulates color, texture,
surface and paint as well as
the illusion of space to define
his contemplation of architec-
ture and nature at
Cranbrook.
James Surls' organic wood
sculptures have become well
known internationally. This
exhibition features five of his
recent sculptures, all with an-
thropomorphic or botanic
references. Less well known
are Mr. Surls' dramatic, large-
scale woodcuts and linocuts.
DeLoss McGraw describes
himself as a "literary artist."
His paintings tell stories that
have been inspired by
literature, ranging from Yeats
to Steinbeck. In this exhibi-
tion, Mr. McGraw's large can-
vases focus upon sublime,
romantic fantasies. The ideas
and images in this series were
triggered by the Pre-
Raphealite painters and poets
of 19th-century England.
The Robert Kidd Gallery is
at 107 Townsend, Birm-
ingham. Gallery hours are
Tues.-Sat. 10:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

Toledo Museum
Acquires Collage

A collage by African-
American artist Romare
Bearden (1911-1988) as been
acquired by the Toledo
Museum of Art and is on view
in Gallery 9. Family Din-
ner,1968, is an example of Mr.
Bearden's assimilation of
European and American
aesthetics in an expression of
a particularly personal
vision.
In the 1950s Mr. Bearden
began to devote himself
seriously to painting, using
this medium to express his
perceptions and interpreta-
tions of his own life and the
unique situations of African
Americans. Keenly aware of
both the separation and inter-
mingling of cultures in this
country, he used painting and
collage to capture these.
The Toledo Museum of Art
is a privately endowed, non-
profit arts institution. Admis-
sion to the museum is free. It
is open Tues.-Sat., 10 a.m.-4
p.m.; Sun., 1-5 p.m.; closed
Mondays and major holidays.
