That may sound hard, he
says, but Mr. Polterovich
believes his choices have
been simple and clear: To
support the Soviet govern-
ment or not. If not, he says,
then he became a dissident
by definition. If a dissident,
then his choice was equally
clear: was it as a Russian or
as a Jew? If as a Jew, then
he would be circumcised. He
would study Hebrew. He
would transplant himself to
Israel.
On the Polterovich family
tree, it seems, every twig
sprouts another mathemati-
cian: his wife, his father, his
mother — they are all math-
ematicians, and they have

all come with him to Israel.
Even his 18-year-old brother
is considering math for him-
self.

But if mathematics is im-
portant in his life, Mr.
Polterovich says, still it is
not everything. Most of all it
is for his five-year-old
daughter that he feels joy in
his new life. Israel will nur-
ture her, he says; he is happy
to have transplanted her to
its soil.
She may not become a
mathematician, he says, but
she will certainly be an Is-
raeli. And that is enough for
Aryeh Polterovich. The peo-
ple of Israel lives. ❑

dress that problem, they
designed a 2-mm square
metal grid with 10,000
holes that are just slight-
ly smaller than the typi-
cal lymphocyte. They
assign to each hole an
identifying number ac-
cording to its place in the
grid.
When they wash a

lymphocytes over the
grid, the lymphocytes get
stuck in the holes, like the
little ball bearings in a
children's party favor.
Then they are exposed to
the laser light and exam-
ined.
In the past year, the re-
searchers say, the
CellScan has detected
nearly 800 asymptomatic
and symptomatic cancers
in Israeli patients, with
an accuracy rate of over
96 percent when checked
later against positive
biopsies. So extraordi-
nary are the results, say
Bar-Ilan officials, that
they have just contracted
with the Israeli Aircraft
Industries company to
manufacture the device
commercially. Already
several U.S. hospitals
have expressed interest in
having the machine. ❑

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israel's
cost-of-living index rose by
1.3 percent in September, a
higher-than-expected jump
that may have dashed hopes
of keeping the annual rate of
inflation for 1992 under 10
percent.

physicists at Bar-Ilan
University in Ramat Gan,
Israel, have developed an
ingenious device that they
say identifies the presence
of a malignancy even when
the body has only a few
disease cells — without a
biopsy, that is, and long
before a person has any
symptoms.
The CellScan, as the
Bar-Ilan researchers call
their invention, relies on
the reaction of white
blood cells, or lym-
phocytes, to cancer.
When lymphocytes from
a person's blood sample
are exposed in the labora-
tory to extracts of known
cancer cells, the lym-
phocytes that previously
encountered the cancer in
the body undergo a struc-
tural change. This reac-
tion shows up when the
lymphocytes are tagged
with a fluorescent dye
and examined under laser
light.
Still, say CellScan in-
ventors Aryeh Weinreb
and Motti Deutsch, keep-
ing track of the responses
of individual, lymphocytes
to many stimuli is easier
said than done. To ad-
