Two Nobel Winners:
Chemistry Medicine

Los Angeles (JTA) — Pro-
fessor Rudolph Marcus of the
California Institute of
Technology in Pasadena has
been named the 1992 Nobel
Prize winner in chemistry.
The Canadian-born Mar-
cus was apparently atten-
ding a meeting in Toronto
and could not be immedi-
ately reached by his office.
However, he was lauded by
colleagues as a "brilliant
theorist and a very nice
man."
Professor Samuel Epstein,
a colleague and friend for
four decades, described Pro-
fessor Marcus as "very Jew-
ish," though more in the
cultural than religious
sense.
Irving Bengelsdorf, a
science writer and expert on
Nobel laureates, said he be-
lieves another of this year's
American Nobel Prize
winners, Edmond Fischer in
medicine, is also Jewish. In
fact, Professor Fischer's
mother was Catholic and
although his father was Jew-
ish, he was not raised as a
Jew. Professor Fischer does
have close ties to the Weiz-
mann Institute of Science in
Israel.
The Shanghai-born, Uni-
versity of Washington scien-
tist was recognized with his

colleague Edwin Krebs for
discoveries leading to a
broad understanding of how
the body regulates cellular
activity.
In recognizing the 69-year-
old professor Marcus for the
$1.2 million chemistry prize,
the Royal Swedish Academy
of Sciences cited his
"contributions to the theory
of electron transfer reactions
in chemical systems."
It praised Professor Mar-
cus for finding "simple
mathematical expressions
for how the energy of a mo-
lecular system is affected by
changes in the structure of
reacting molecules and their
nearest neighbors."

WITH A SPECIAL TRIBUTE

To
RAE ANN SHARFMAN

Professor Marcus was
awarded Israel's prestigious
Wolf Prize two years ago and
is widely known in the
Israeli scientific community,
said Professor Harry Gray,
another colleague. "I think
the Israelis saw what was
coming by giving him the
Wolf Prize," he said.
Professor Gray said Pro-
fessor Marcus' research is
likely to lead to new devel-
opments in energy storage
and conversion, particularly
in building more advanced
fuel cells and solar energy
devices.

French Tribute
Is Interrupted

Lyon, France (JTA) — A
dedication ceremony here for
a new research center on the
French Resistance Move-
ment was disrupted by an
outburst from a supporter of
Jean Marie Le Pen's ex-
tremist National Front.
Portuguese President
Mario Soares and Nobel
peace laureate Elie Wiesel,
the event's keynote speaker,
were among those in the hall
when Bruno Gollnisch, a
National Front member of
the European Parliament,
shouted that the speaker,
Lyon Mayor Michel Noir,
was maligning his party.
"You can't use this
rostrum to smear the Na-
tional Front. This is not a
propaganda meeting," Mr.
Gollnisch called out before
being punched in the head
by a reporter for a French-
Jewish radio station.
The audience, composed
largely of former Resistance

for Physically Handicapped Children

fighters and Holocaust sur-
vivors, shouted "Out, get
out." An elderly man also
got to Mr. Gollnisch and
slapped him in the face.
Police intervened to restore
calm.
Mr. Gollnisch is
understood to have entered
the hall with the help of a
National Front sympathizer
among the Resistance mem-
bers.
His accusation against the
mayor follows the filing, by
Mr. Le Pen himself, of a libel
suit against a Jewish leader
for tying him to racial
violence.
Mr. Gollnisch's interrup-
tion came as Mr. Noir, chok-
ing with tears, was speaking
about his father, a
Resistance member deported
to the Mauthausen concen-
tration camp. The mayor
had expressed revulsion at
attempts to rewrite the his-
tory of that period.
