Alvin Rosenfeld, -lou r nalist (-R Jerusalem (JTA) — Alvin osenfeld, a former NBC bu- reauchief in Jerusalem who covered nearly all Israel's wars since the birth of the ewish state, died in Wash- gton on Oct. 10 of cancer. e was 73. He was to be buried in New Jersey. Mr. Rosenfeld was a famil- iar and respected figure in the small community of vet- ran correspondents who ,:vered Israel and the Mid- dle East in the early days of he Jewish state. A native of St. Louis and grandson of the late St. Louis Chief Rabbi Zachariah Rosenfeld, he wrote about the War of Independence in 1948 for the New York Post. He reported on the Sinai campaign of 1956 for the New York Herald Tribune and covered the trial of Nazi war criminal Adolph Eichmann for that news- paper and for NBC News, which he later joined as a - , correspondent. Mr. Rosenfeld became NBC bureau chief in Madrid in 1965 and returned to i Et Jerusalem as Israeli bureau chief for the network in 1967, a few days before the outbreak of the Six-Day War. He was the only Western reporter to enter the Old City of Jerusalem with the Israeli forces, led by Gen. Moshe Dayan, when they captured the Western Wall. In 1971, Rosenfeld was posted to Washington as a State Department cor- respondent for NBC. After he left the network, he returned to war reportage for the last time as a special correspondent for the Wash- ington Post, covering the Yom Kippur War and its aftermath. He also served for a time as spokesman for Keren Hayesod in Jerusalem. In 1986, Mr. Rosenfeld joined the nascent U.S. Holocaust Memorial Muse- urn in Washington, playing a major role in its early planning. He went on to become a consultant to the museum. Victor Shiffman Victor Shiffman, 91, of Bloomfield Hills, died Oct. 20. An account executive with US Fastener Corporation, Mr. Shiffman was a member of Congregation Shaarey Zedek, a board member of Shiffman Foundation, a partner in Fort Street Realty, a family business, and a member of Franklin Hills Country Club. He leaves his wife, Alfrieda "Freddy" Shiffman; daugh- ters and a son-in-law, Susan and Bruce Gershenson of Franklin, Julie Shiffman of Southfield; sisters, Sylvia Ruskin of Southfield, Ethel Caplan of Southfield; three grandchildren. Carrie Gerson Carrie Hayden Gerson, 96, of Southfield, died Oct. 19. Mrs. Gerson was co-founder of Myer's Jewelry Shop. She ran the business until she retired in 1976 at the age of 80. She was a member of Temple Beth El, Franklin Hills Country Club and Hadassah.
