Judge Menahem Neeman of the riaifa court heard the evidence from the angry L'itigants, all worshipers at the Bat Galim Sephardi syn- gogue, and ruled: "No, aham Biton had no right Co interrupt the chazan with requent corrections and criticism during the prayer ervice, and he was ordered to desist. At the same time, the synagogue committee was told it had no right to ban Mr. iton from the services if he .1- , ained quiet hereafter. A sign has been posted in the synagogue: "It is forbidden to disturb the cantor during ser- z_ces." Were These the Still Waters? Sam Ezra, a resident of Petach Tikvah, was ar- rested, and 22,000 bottles of water in his possession were impounded. They were label- c1 "Holy Water,” and Judge Teeman instructed that the contents be given laboratory checks to ascertain if they !ame from the Jordan River or from the local spigot. Strictly Judicial Judge- ment, Of Course. Attorney I Moshe Meroz represented a young client being tried on rlrug charges before Judge v ictoria Ostrowsky. He plead- ed that the young man be released, both on the grounds of the lack of evidence, and because he, Mr. Meroz, had thus far had a good statistical record before this judge. The defendant was acquitted. A Discriminating Burg- lar. The judge in the Haifa court heard the evidence: Shmuel Hamu threw a stone through a plate glass window of a local bank, entered and ,helped himself to — 40 packs of his favorite cigarette which he found in one of the cup- boards and then left. No, he was not a bank robber. He just had an uncontrollable impulse. The judge gave him 'v - „ r a four-month suspended sentence and urged that he control himself hereafter. Their Marriage Went Up in Smoke. A 40-year-old hus- band from Ness Ziona asked the rabbinical court in Rehovot to grant him a divorce because, in violation of a written promise his wife had given him to refrain from smoking, she had returned to the noxious weed. Getting to the Heart of the Matter. Six judges of the Tel Aviv Municipal Court fil- ed suit in the Jerusalem Labor Court against Israel's National Insurance, Bituach Leumi, demanding that the heart attacks which they had all suffered be recognized as ailments incurred as a rsult of their work and hence qualify- ing them for appropriate compensation. Keep Him Out, and Them Too. The District Court in Tel Aviv heard a request from a woman that her husband be barred from entering her home, at least for a few months, on the grounds that he was resorting to unusual tactics to compel her to agree to a divorce. Lately he had begun bringing mice into the house, knowing how much this would disturb her. A Matter of Penmanship. A three-judge bench in the Beersheba District Court voided a judgment against Chaim Rachamim, who had been found guilty of traffic violations. The grounds: the minutes of the trial, as record- ed by hand by the judge, were written in an almost illegible handwriting. A Minor Difference. The newspaper Haaretz published a correction of its previous report of a libel case. The passage in the press report should have read, "The fun- damental rulings of Judge Maltz, and not "the criminal demands of the judge." Citing Authority. When the Israel Labor Party brought suit for libel against Professor Amnon Rubenstein, the court refused to hear the case on the grounds that it was a political matter. The Labor Party attorney cited from a learned book of law to show that the court did have competence in the matter. The book: Constitutional Law in Israel by Professor Amnon Rubenstein. ❑ When So Sorry is not enough .
