The new $10 million, eight-
acre complex, designed by
Jerusalem architect Yair
Gootman, himself a disabled
veteran who suffered serious
`'.eg injuries during the 1967
Six-Day War, will cater to
some 4,500 local members.
Bet Kay, in the quiet nor-
thern resort town of
7Nahariya, was the disabled
veterans' first home in 1958.
-'_flow it is primarily used as a
rest and recreation center by
the IDF Medical Corps.
The Tel Aviv facility, cover-
ing seven pristine acres in the
tranquil northern suburb of
Afeka, was opened in 1974. It
,presently provides services to
over 18,000 disabled veterans
and their immediate families.
The five-year-old Haifa Bet
Halochem, which hugs the
western slopes of the French
Carmel, serves over 2,300
F l,, disabled veterans.
I Although the Defense
Ministry contributes about 30
percent of Beit Halochem's
financial needs with a similar
sum raised from members'
subscriptions, the balance has
to be raised from other
sources. "Wear and tear of
olLquipment comprises a
substantial percentage of our
' budget," Mr. Luttenberg
points out, "and maintenance
costs can be phenomenal."
The atmosphere at all the
centers is congenial, and the
_word patient is never heard.
One is a member. In fact
membership is offered to the
entire family, to take advan-
tage of the pools, gym-
nasiums, shops and cafes.
Hydrotherapy and standard
rehabilitative therapy are
widely used, but, says Mr.
Luttenberg, "There is no bet-
ter therapy than meeting
other handicapped veterans
and seeing what fulfilling
lives they lead despite their
disability."
One regular activity is call-
ed "a meeting of the genera-
tions," where the recently in-
capacitated come into contact
with old-timers who show
how coping with handicaps is
eminently possible.
More of a country club that
an outpatient clinic, Beit
Halochem is filling a vital
need in a country which has
more than its share of
paraplegics. "We encourage
our members to return to
work," said Mr. Luttenberg,
"for having an occupation is
the top priority. Sport is the
key to that recovery." ❑
