At one time, some of the best hamburgers in town were gotten at little bars .. . Miller's in Dearborn was famous for its burgers served on a paper napkin. Although decor has its place, Lafayette Coney Island in downtown Detroit, for ex- ample, had little of it to rave about but people came from everywhere in minks, tuxedos or just plain everyday clothes to enjoy the tasty devils then put out at both Lafayette and American next door. Ramone's Cafe in Sunset Strip on Northwestern Highway just north of 12, fits well into the category of im- probability for gourmet cuisine at evening time. This very unpretentious lit- tle place that seats only 40 people, all at tables, and a seven-stool counter, original- ly opened June 21 of this year for lunch only until 3 p.m. as Ramone's Coney Cafe, with the very strange combination of Coney Island hot dogs and Caesar salads as its main dishes. People are still able to have their Coneys with kosher or non-kosher hot dogs, but on- ly during the day, Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., along with Caesar salads and a dressing made by owner Hassan Awarsaji, plus other dishes and sandwiches. However, at dinner, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., which began a month ago, Sept. 15, it's a totally new ballgame . . . The Caesar salads of which Ramone is highly noted, are made tableside by him with egg white or whole egg, and dishes include the likes of steak Diane, Norwegian salmon, whitefish, angel hair pasta with marinara or Alfredo sauce, grilled chicken breasts, etc. Not to be forgotten are Ramone's juicy turkey burgers which can be ordered at both lunch or evening. When it opened for dinner, the name changed from Ramone's Coney Cafe to just Ramone's Cafe, although a sign on the buillding still has its original title. The decor is practically nil, a few pictures on the walls its only decoration, but who cares say people like Rosellen and Sy Gliner among the many regulars who have "discovered" Ramone's . . . The food is that good. He got his name while at the former Restaurant Duglass . . . Doug Grech used to call him Ray after Hassan came here from New York in 1978 to get a master's degree in business administration from Wayne State University. Ramone did everything at Duglass, from valet to busboy to waiter to washing dishes to being its bookkeeper . . . but always keeping a watchful eye as Doug and his chefs prepared their much touted culinary delights . . . He became its maitre d' in 1983 and the name Ray didn't seem classy enough for his new stature . . . hence came Ramone. During the day, Ramone is assisted by very competent Kevin Bell in preparing lun- chtime fare. From 5 p.m. on, Executive Chef Dale Allmay is with Ramone . . . They worked together years back at Restaurant Duglass . . . Since then he has been with Carol Haskins at the former Great Dane and Jacques where now sits Morels on Telegraph .. . Daytimes, Dale is sous chef at the Bloomfield Hunt Club. The only thing that comes out of a can at Ramone's Cafe is the paint that covers its walls . . . He makes his own Caesar dressing, Greek dress- ing, gyros dressing, marinara sauce, demiglasse sauce for the steak Diane, and a long list of other things that spell the word fresh in big letters. Even the creamy chocolate chip cheesecake, a delicacy of sinful delight, is made at Ramone's Cafe. All types of restaurants have their place in our dining out society . . . whether it be one of fancy elegance to the casual niceties of relaxed in- formal dining. A place like Ramone's Cafe has its own sort of enticement . . . The biggest things going for it other than cleanliness are excellent quality food superbly prepared at low prices . . . That it is served in a very plain atmosphere has little bearing here . . . Beautiful decor is quite a minute factor in an operation like this. There is a certain charm about Ramone's Cafe in Sunset Strip on Northwestern Highway . . . Just like sitting at the counter of Peter's K in Oak Park and getting wide- eyed by the gourmet presen- tations at such low cost .. . Ramone's is one of those very unpretentious dining sleepers people talk about . . . and cherish dearly. IT WAS A BIG night for Stuart Gorelick and his staff of the new George Burns Theatre in Livonia . . . The dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by 96-year-old George Burns who was visibly thrilled by what he terms as one of the great honors in his long lifetime. Stuart may or may not have known it, but he did a great service to the people in this region by opening the George Burns Theatre . . . Driving downtown to see Broadway Ramone's Cafe fits well into the category of improbability for gourmet cuisine at evening time. shows had become somewhat of a hassle, and bringing in New York hits to the subur- ban area is something many people have hoped for . . . George couldn't have been happier than to have a rabbi bless the theatre named for him . . . Rabbi M. Robert Syme made him a very con- tented man. Then it was on to the Ritz Carlton for a reception honor- ing George Burns . . . The ballroom could have used rub- ber walls for expansion, there were so many people. Naturally Mort Weisling doing his Inspector Colombo by Peter Falk impression as he does on the Buddy's Pizza TV commercials . . . Millie Felch wearing green contacts to match her dress . . . Art Emanuel with a camera in his pocket; he never goes
