"The name of Baedeker has long been identified in the field of guidebooks with reliable, comprehensive and up-to-date information prepared by expert writers who work from detailed, first- hand knowledge of the coun- try concerned." Thus reads the foreword of Baedeker on Israel, now on sale in bookshops everywhere. Oh, yeah? We went quickly through the 286 pages of the expen- sive guidebook, and this is what we find. Judge for yourself. The history of Safed, from the first century down to pre- sent times, concludes with the following: "In May 1948 a group of 120 Palmach ter- rorists (sic!) attacked the Arab positions and drove the Arabs out of the town, which since then has been purely Jewish." In its news update for 1982 the guidebook reports: "After Israeli troops marched to West Beirut on Sept. 16-18, many civilians are massacred in the Palestinian camps of Sabra and Chatila." The in- ference is obvious. One of Israel's great con- tributions to world order is reported thus: (in 1981) "Israel's air force destroys an Iraqi atomic reactor; the USA votes in favor of condemna- tion of Israel in the UN." For its helpful list of hotels, the book cites 26 hostelries in West Jerusalem, and 40 in east Jerusalem, at the same time managing to move east a few of the west side hotels, like the Windmill and the Sheraton. The "Wailing Wall" gets less than 25 lines. The Moslem connection with the area gets more than five pages. What is the appeal of the country to visitors? "Tourists and pilgrims come to enjoy the many sights that the country has to offer — the monuments of the ancient civilizations, its medieval Crusader fortresses and above all the Christian and Jewish holy places. The resorts of the Mediterranean and the Gulf of Eilat provide a further in- centive." In other words, the country is a glorified museum which, fortunately, also offers pleasant resort facilities. Not a word, not a breath of the spirit and exhiliration of the modern State of Israel. The delicate malice in the reporting is outdone only by the mishmash of ignorance and misinformation, of which we select some of the more flagrant. Who can have con- fidence in the accuracy of a guidebook which writes that the Jewish Agency was created in 1897 by Theodor Herzl, and on another page, in 1933. The last guess is close. The Agency was created cf, in 1929, 25 years after Mr. Herzl's death. In the guide the sea-washed grottos at Rosh Hanikra are miraculously moved up into the mountains, since "a funicular goes up to its caves." Typographical errors are not always typographical since the misspellings are sometimes repeated: "Yefe Not" road in Haifa; the Admediya and later the Ahmadiva sect in Haifa, both wrong. Nahriya becomes Nahariyah and then Nahariyya a few lines later; kibbutz Ne'ol Mordekhay; Mishkenot Shaanaim. Bezalel will learn here that it is an Academy for Art and Drama. The city of Arad is on- ly an archaeological site. Degania hardly exists. Yad Vashem gets only a few pass- ing lines and is not listed in the index. Perhaps one can find humor in the glossary of terms by the Baedeker experts, thus: • Gabbai is "the governing body of the Synagogue." • Tefila: "A prayer belt made of dark leather, with a box containing texts from the Torah." • Aliyah is "waves" of Jews returning to Palestine. • Ashkenazim are Jews originating from central and eastern Europe who came to Palestine via the Balkans. • Chatan Torah is the "prayer leader in the synagogue." • Rabbis: "Jewish religious teachers chosen by the con- gregation (not ordained)." The Hebrew University is in west Jerusalem. Mount Scopus? That's where the old university was opened in 1925. There are many good guidebooks to Israel. This ob- viously is not one of them. ❑
