desire for political re-
form and the effects
of redistricting will
soon become apparent in
Oakland County.
In the 39th District House
race, Democratic newcomer
Kirk Nemer challenges in-
cumbent Rep. Barbara Dobb.
West Bloomfield, Commerce
Township, Orchard Lake
Village, Walled Lake and
Keego Harbor are included
in this district.
Only 30-years-old, Mr.
Nemer said he has received
great response to his youth.
"I was concerned that my
age would be a negative fac-
tor in the race but it's not,"
Mr. Nemer said. "There's a
new mood in government.
People are ready for
change."
Environmental issues —
especially wetlands, taxes
and schools (he is against fi-
nancial cuts) — are among
Mr. Nemer's concerns. Both
Mr. Nemer and Ms. Dobb are
pro-choice.
Although Ms. Dobb is not
Jewish, she is recognized in
the community for her sup-
port of the Holocaust
Memorial Center.
Rounding out the race in
the 39th District is Liber-
tarian candidate David
Nagy.
In the 40th District House
race, Democrat Scott Sitner
hopes to upset incumbent
John Jamian. Birmingham,
Bloomfield Township,
Bloomfield Hills, Southfield
and Sylvan Lake comprise
the district.
Like Mr. Nemer, 27-year-
old Mr. Sitner has found the
public responding positively
to his age.
"People see my experience
and seem to have no objec-
tions to my age. Actually, a
lot of people have expressed
an interest in seeing
younger people in office,"
Mr. Sitner said.
Mr. Sitner is against cuts
in education. He is pro-
choice — a factor Mr. Sitner
hopes will help him in Dem-
ocratic areas like Franklin
and Beverly Hills.
Mr. Jamian is not pro-
choice. Mr. Jamian's plat-
form includes lower taxes
and term limitations for pol-
iticians.
Democrat Sander Levin
will see how he fares in the
12th Congressional District.
Redistricting moved Mr.

Levin from the highly Jew-
ish population of Southfield
to Royal Oak, Oak Park,
Huntington Woods, Fern-
dale, Pleasant Ridge,
Berkley, Hazel Park,
Madison Heights, Clawson
and Troy.
Mr. Levin will face Repub-
lican John Pappageorge,
Libertarian Charles Hahn
and Natural Law Party can-
didate R.W. Montgomery.
The 11th Congressional
District pits Democrat
Walter Briggs, a 35-year-old
accountant, against Repub-
lican Joe Knollenberg for
the vacancy left by retiring
Rep. Bill Broomfield. Mr.
Knollenberg secured his
position in the highly
publicized August primary,
slipping by state Sen. David
Honigman and retired judge
Alice Gilbert. Libertarian

"There's a new
mood in
government.
People are ready
for change."

Kirk Nemer

Party candidate Brian
Richard Wright and Natural
Law Party candidate Henry
Odgen Clark are also vying
for the seat.
The 11th Congressional
District includes Bloomfield
Hills, West Bloomfield,
Keego Harbor, Sylvan Lake,
Birmingham, Farmington,
Farmington Hills, Milford,
most of Southfield, Livonia,
Redford, Novi, Northville,
White Lake, South Lyo and
Highland.
The 35th District House
(parts of Royal Oak, Fern-
dale, Pleasant Ridge, Oak
Park and parts of Berkley)
race has Democrat David
Gubow, Republican Marc
Wanat and unaffiliated can-
didate Peter Friedlander
competing for the seat.
Democrat Maxine Berman
will face Republican
Lawrence Stack in the 36th
District House Race. The
district includes Southfield
and Lathrup Village.
Republican Shirley
Johnson faces Democrat
Rhonda Ross and Tisch Par-
ty Candidate Matthew
