Jewish Campaign by $60,000
this year. The Campaign share
of the $3.2 million FAS budget
is $450,000.
"Our cost of doing business
has increased," Mr. Finkelberg
said, "but our income has not."
He said the number of campers
has remained steady the last
three years at 1,400-1,500.

News of Mr. Berman's firing
became known in advance of
last night's FAS 90th anniver-
sary celebration at Congre-
gation Beth Abraham Hillel
Moses. Several former camp
counselors who worked under
Mr. Berman in the 1960s met
last week to plan protests.
The group decided not to
boycott the anniversary cele-
bration, but to write letters of
protest to community leaders
and the Fresh Air Society
board.
"We did not want to embar-
rass Marv, or jeopardize any ac-
tion he might take," said Sherri
Loeb, hostess of last week's
protest meeting. She said the
group may ask to meet with the
Fresh Air board to discuss ru-
mored changes at Tamarack
Camps and the firing of long-
time personnel.
"Mary Berman did not have
a corporate image," said Mrs.
Loeb. "But you only had to
work with him day-to-day or in
an emergency to know what he
was like."
Mr. Finkelberg said that any
time someone is released "who
is as dedicated as Mary was,
you will hear from the commu-
nity. We are working with
Mary on an out-placement
package. We worked with the
others to come up with some-
thing that was more than ade-
quate and fair."
Mr. Berman has hired a
lawyer to help work out the set-
tlement. He began at Tama-
rack as a camp counselor in
1955. He became camp direc-
tor in 1964, then worked for
seven years as an administra-
tor at the University of
Michigan's school of social work
before returning to Tamarack
in 1978.
He was passed over twice by
the FAS board for the executive
directorship: Sam Fisher from
Israel was hired to replace the
retiring Sam Marcus in the
mid-1980s, and Mr. Finkelberg
of Montreal was hired last year.
Mr. Berman's last day with
camp is today.
He was notified of his release
Sept. 15 at a meeting with IVIr.
Finkelberg and FAS President
Jonathan Haber. He said he
was given two weeks' notice,
but was granted four weeks at
his request.

Mr. Berman, 58, said he may
try to get back into teaching or
social service work. ❑
