JTS Targets
Home Violence

New York (JTA) — Do-
mestic violence is the
leading cause of violent
death among women in the
United States, according to
the Surgeon General's office,
and Jews are not excluded
from the epidemic.
The Conservative
movement's Jewish Theolog-
ical Seminary has decided to
target this trend in its an-
nual High Holy Days mes-
sage to congregations and to
America in general.
Every day in the United
States, an average of 10 wo-
men are murdered by their
batterers, and 22 percent of
all women seeking treat-
ment in hospital emergency
rooms are there as a result of
domestic violence.
An estimated 3 to 4 million
women a year are affected,
regardless of religious, social
and economic status.
JTS pushed its message in
full-page advertisements in
the New York Times, the
Wall Street Journal and
Newsweek during the 10
days between Rosh
Hashanah and Yom Kippur
and has mailed 350,000
copies to 850 Conservative
congregations for distribu-
tion.
The timing coincides with
the designation of October as
the country's Domestic
Violence Awareness Month.
The committee selected, as
the message's theme and
headline, a line from the
volume of midrash, Genesis
Rabba: "Know whom you
put to shame, for in the
likeness of God is (s)he
made."
Denial, so prevalent in
homes where domestic
violence takes place, is one
of the most troubling aspects
of the problem, said Rita
Kashner, a member of the
message committee and au-
thor of the text.
Denial among Jews is even
more prevalent than in the
general population because
of "traditional, and baseless,
assumptions that Jews do
not drink, abuse substances
or gamble," said Marjorie
Wyler, the committee's di-
rector.
Statistics provided by the
Federal Bureau of Investiga-
tion bear this out. According
to the FBI, only one of 10 in-
cidents of wife-beating is re-
ported to authorities, and
tte higher the family's level
oT income, the less likely the
victim is to report the abuse.
