Fred M. Butzel Award for Distinguished Community Service

William M. Davidson

To sports lovers, the name Bill Davidson is synonymous with
basketball. To American business, he's known as a successful
industrialist.

But to many people in Israel, Bill Davidson is the creator of a pilot
plant that will help researchers learn how to harvest heat energy
in deserts and transport it for use in industrial regions.

Federation's 41st annual award for outstanding community service
goes to a man whose philanthropy and leadership qualities have
set a tone for others to emulate.

As chairman of the 1974 Allied Jewish Campaign, Bill Davidson
led our community to new heights of philanthropy in the wake of
the Yom Kippur War. Israel Bonds and Weizmann Institute have
honored him for his many contributions to the state of Israel, and
a Yavne community center will be built with his assistance.

Former president of Congregation Shaarey Zedek, he continues
the family interest in Jewish education. His gift enabled construc-
tion of a wing of Hillel Day School.

The University of Michigan is yet another beneficiary of his
philanthropy. The William Davidson Institute at the U. of M.
Business School was endowed earlier this year.

For his many years of leadership and service to the Jewish people
and the Detroit metropolitan area, our honoree fulfills the highest
ideals of the Fred M. Butzel Memorial Award.

Bill Davidson will enable a new institute at the University
of Michigan to develop overseas market economies.
