Hershel Shanks:
Too bad for Bush.

faring well? A "pro-Israel"
platform, the elimination of
Jesse Jackson as a power
broker, and absence of the
sort of pro-Palestinian
resolutions passed at 1988
state Democratic conven-
tions.
Meanwhile, Moment
magazine assiduously en-
dorses neither candidate,
but sure stacks the deck
against Mr. Bush. While
saying Mr. Bush has not
been as bad toward Israel as
he is made out to be,"
editor Hershel Shanks calls
Mr. Bush's domestic and
economic policies
"disastrous."
Mr. Shanks believes that
Bill Clinton "would not only
understand, but be sympa-
thetic to Israel's needs."
While concluding that U.S.
Jews can support both can-
didates' Middle East poll-
', cies, "we should never-
theless let both . . . know we
are watching them closely
and will be affected by their
attitude toward Israel."
Elsewhere, Moment dourly
comments on the Bush cam-
paign's fits and starts. It •
claims the campaign prom-
ised the magaiine an article
by Henry Kissinger on why
Jews should vote for the
president; Mr. Kissinger
says he never agreed to
write the piece. In lieu of the
Kissinger piece, the White
House offered Moment an ar-
ticle by the president
himself. The magazine
agreed, but only if it could
recruit a piece from Gov.
Clinton on why Jews should
vote for him.
Both candidates submitted
articles, and Moment printed
both. "But the Bush piece is
so bad," stated Moment,
". . . we feel it only fair to tell
our readers why we are prin-
ting it. Obviously, Bush
himself did not write it. In
all probability, he never saw
it. We have not endorsed
either candidate, but if we
had to vote on a campaign
staff, it is clear for whom we
would vote . . ." ❑
