...and now I'm living it!"
"I haven't had this much fun in years! I've met new friends. I'm involved in
activities. I'm happy — and so is my family. Before, housekeeping was a chore,
cooking for myself wasn't fun, and I didn't feel secure living alone. Now, my family
has peace of mind. „and I'm having the time of my life!"

' If
of my good friends in the
African American commu-
nity that what he admired
most about the Jewish peo-
ple was our collective sense
of history and our memory
of our past. I thought then
. how ironic that we, the Jew-
ish people, were abandoning
our memory and our history
with the speed of light, while
the black community was
' conversely pursuing theirs.
Outside of his Federation
life, Mr. Schlussel was clear-
' ly bothered by what was
happening around him in
Jewish life. On one hand, he
was concerned over assimi-
lation and intermarriage,
and on the other hand, he
_ called for Jewish outreach
to non-Jewish spouses of in-
termarriage. In a quite dif-
ferent area, he said that the
Jewish community was too
apologetic for its own cul-
tural differences with main-
stream America. He said
Jews must be outspoken in
defining their own interests
without fear of repercus-
sions.
"As a people we're always
concerned that we're going
to mess things up for our-
selves here in America," he
said, "and because of that
we've lost our sense of con-
tinuity."
Mr. Schlussel added that
he didn't mean to sound pes-
simistic about the future of
American Jewry. He said he
remains, to the contrary, op-
timistic but he is still con-
cerned.
After his Thursday
speech was concluded and
other festivities completed,
including the awarding of
the Fred M. Butzel Award
to William Davidson and the
turnover of the presidency
to David Page, Mr. Schlus-
sel seemed happy and re-
laxed.
"I felt strong, and I felt
like I was connecting with
the audience," he said. "I
know I didn't talk about my
achievements, but I had this
inside of me. I gave this job
every part of my energy. I
ran full speed from starting
gate to final bell. I loved be-
ing president of the Federa-
tion. When it's over, it's
over. I got done everything
- I could get done." ❑
