Jerusalem (JTA) — In a
surprise development, police
have detained three Israeli
Arabs in connection with the
shooting of a farmer working
the fields of Moshav Gadish,
in Lower Galilee.
Suspicion fell at first on a
nearby village in the West
Bank after Avraham Cohen,
32, was wounded by gunfire
from a passing car. He was
admitted to Afula Hospital,
where his condition was de-
scribed as stable.
Police later traced the car
and its owners to the village
of Salim, within Israel's pre-
1967 borders, and arrested
its owner and his two sons.
News of the arrests came
as a surprise to inhabitants
of the region, where Israeli
Arabs are rarely involved in
terror attacks. Salim, most
of whose inhabitants work in
nearby Afula, has a reputa-
tion for peaceful relations
with its neighbors.
The attack came as
Jerusalem reported several
terror assaults over the last
few days. Security sources
attribute the escalation to
the Hamas fundamentalist
group, which oppose the

and the Palestinians.
A 33-year-old yeshiva stu-
dent, Hanan Gol, was stabb-
ed and slightly wounded
Wednesday while walking
through an Old City alley
near the Jewish Quarter.
At the same time, in the
western part of the city,
Sima Kiwiti, 43, was stabb-
ed and suffered a slight
wound in her arm. She said
she was assaulted by an
Arab on emerging from her
place of work at an old age
home on Toviya Hefetz
Street. Both attackers
managed to escape.
Police, meanwhile, were
holding a Palestinian in
connection with the shooting
death earlier this week of an
Israeli border policeman in
east Jerusalem.
A previous attack by
Israeli Arab terrorists oc-
curred last February at a
military post in Galed,
where three new recruits
were hacked to death while
sleeping. Four Israeli Arabs
from a village in Wadi Ara
are serving life terms for the
killings.
Nathan Raises Money
For Somali Refugees
New York (JTA) — Jewish
groups are signing on to a
project by Israeli peace ac-
tivist Abie Nathan to raise
$1 million from Jews for a
tent city he wants to build
for Somali refugees in
Kenya.
Mr. Nathan flew into town
a few weeks ago bent on get-
ting the Jewish community
to help build the tent city,
which he envisions shelter-
ing some 20,000 refugees
and taking care of their
medical needs.
With his track record as a
philanthropist who gets
things done, he had met with
a group of about a dozen
representatives of Jewish
organizations within an
hour and a half of landing at
Kennedy Airport.

Police Hold Arabs
In Moshav Attack
He brought with him a
detailed budget and a letter
of reference from the U.N.
High Commissioner for
Refugees, as well as permis-
sion from Kenyan au-
thorities to erect the protec-
tive tents within their
borders, where some 300,000
Somali refugees are believed
to have gathered.
The Reform movement's
Union of American Hebrew
Congregations and the
United Synagogue of Con-
servative Judaism are ask-
ing member synagogues to
make a bid for aid to Somali
refugees during the tradi-
tional appeals conducted at
High Holiday services.
In addition, the National
Jewish Community Rela-
tions Advisory Council is
looking into ways for local
Jewish community councils
to contribute to the effort.
Jewish organizations are
planning to run an adver-
tisement for donations in the
New York Times, under the
name "Jewish Coalition for
Somali Refugee Relief."
Mr. Nathan wants to en-
sure a specifically Jewish
contribution to the relief
effort especially since
Somalia, a Muslim country,
has been antagonistic to
Israel. He wants it known
that Jews, and Israel, give
charity without regard to
creed or nationality.
