The Holocaust Memorial
Center in West Bloomfield
will sponsor a lecture on
"Italians and Jews: Rescue
and Aid During the Holo-
caust" by Israeli scholar Meir
Michaelis, 7:30 p.m. Oct. 22 at
the Maple-Drake Jewish
Community Center. Professor
Michaelis will discuss the
unique role Italy played as a
haven for Jews during World
War II.
Meir Michaelis received his
master's from the Hebrew
University of Jerusalem with
majors in history, sociology
and the theory of education.
He served as military
historian on the Israeli
General Staff from 1955 to
1964 and as visiting lecturer
at the Cadet Academy and
the Command and Staff Col-
lege from 1955 to 1961.
Since 1972, Professor
Michaelis has been with the
Institute of Contemporary
Jewry at the Hebrew Univer-
sity of Jerusalem where he
became a full professor in
1982. He is a member of the
Historical Society of Israel
(Jerusalem), the Interna-
tional Institute for Strategic
Studies (London), and the
Society for Italian Historical
Studies (Boston).
Professor Michaelis is
preparing the volume on Ita-
ly for Yad Vashem's multi-
volume history of the
Holocaust as well as writing
the entry on Italy for the
Holocaust Memorial Center's
two-volume The World Reacts
to the Holocaust, 1945-1990 to
be published by Johns
Hopkins University Press in
1993. The appearance of Pro-
fessor Michaelis is made
possible through the coopera-
tion of the National Italian
American Foundation.
The lecture is free of charge.
