n its first year of opera-
tion, Sinai Hospital offi-
cials had few expecta-
tions for their new family
practice department.
"It was a big risk," said
department chairman Dr.
Sander Kushner. "When I
took this position a year ago,
I said I would be happy the
first year if I just did the
paper work to organize the
concept."
Next month, the depart-
ment will celebrate its first
anniversary with more
success than Dr. Kushner
anticipated. In fact, the
department is doing so well
that it will expand several
times within the coming
months.
This department is a first
for Sinai, which hadn't
before concentrated on the
concept of family medicine.
"Sinai traditionally has
not had a family practice
department, but it is ex-
tremely important to move
forward," said Sinai Presi-
dent Phil Schaengold.
Expansion began for the
new department last May
when the hospital opened a
22-bed family care unit. In
November of 1991, the prac-
tice admitted no patients to
Sinai. Last month, admis-

sions totalled 60.
Next month, the hospital
will open a five-day-a-week
family clinic in the profes-
sional building adjacent to
the hospital.
Two full-time physicians
will run the clinic. Current-
ly, a small clinic is open just
one day a week.
Next, in January, Sinai
will open what Dr. Kushner
hopes will be the first of
many neighborhood family
care clinics at Park Woods
Plaza at 10 Mile and
Coolidge in Oak Park.
"This is quite exciting,"
Dr. Kushner said. "The Jew-
ish community has a real
need for total family health
care. It is a good thing to br-
ing people to a family doctor
who knows all the history
and then refers them to spe-
cialists as needed."
Sinai opted to target Oak
Park/Huntington Woods for
its first satellite clinic partly
because it is an area with
young Jewish families, Dr.
Kushner said.
"These families will ap-
preciate the total care con-
cept," Dr. Kushner said.
Dr. Kushner said Sinai ex-
pects the department to
grow. Planned are a series of
family practice centers
throughout the community.

sites in West Bloomfield and
Farmington Hills. El

Yad Ezra Plans
First Youth Walk

or a 12-year-old girl,
Tamara Weinberg of
West Bloomfield has
quite the civic mind.
On Rosh Hashanah at
Adat Shalom Synagogue,
she asked leaders of her
seventh-grade service if she
could stand up and say a few
words about the first youth
walk for Yad Ezra, a project
to feed the Jewish hungry.
"I'm going to do the walk,"
she told the group of about
50 students in the seventh
grade. "You should, too."
These days, Tamara is
busy telling everyone she
knows about the walk, to be
held Oct. 25 at 12:30 p.m. at
the Maple-Drake Jewish
Community Center.
"It is a good way to help
the people who are needy
and do not have food,"

Tamara says. "I feel lucky
because I have a family who
can afford food."
Yad Ezra officials hope
other children like Tamara
will join them on the walk,
which will be held on the
grounds of the JCC. Jewish
youngsters from most area
synagogues, temples, re-
ligious schools and youth
groups will join parents and
adults from the community
to help raise money to feed
the hungry.
"We are grateful for the
participation and enthusi-
asm the Jewish community
has given this first time
event," says walk organizer
Jeff Adler.

pany their sister on the
walk
