kill a few millions of Serbs
and all of the Jews.
In 1943, I spent six months
in a German concentration
camp named Topolya, located
in Yugoslavia. The population
of the camp consisted of a
small group of Jews and
thousands of Serbs. Our op-
pressors were Germans and
the Croats. The Croats and
the Muslims killed Serbs and
Jews with a zeal exceeding
that of their German masters.
Upon the breakup of the
former Yugoslavia, ethnic
violence erupted on both
sides. The Serbs were burden-
ed by horrible memories and
the reality of once again be-
ing victimized by Croats and
Muslims. This time, however,
the Serbs had superior
military force on their side.
The Croats received
diplomatic support from
United Germany.
Anyone knowledgeable
about the ethnic animosities
of the region would have no
doubt that the Croats and
Muslims utilized whatever
resources they have against
the Serbs. Atrocities have
been perpetrated by all par-
ties involved in this conflict.
What happens in the form-
er Yugoslavia evokes bad

memories in those of us who
are Holocaust survivors. The
same applies to our children.
"Bosnia-Herzegovina —
Another Holocaust in the
Making?" was chosen as the
topic for the Oct. 4, 1992
meeting of the Children of
Holocaust-Survivors Associa-
tion in Michigan.
Invoking the specter of the
Holocaust whenever oppres-
sion rears its ugly head trivi-
alizes the past and compli-
cates the present. The atroci-
ties perpetrated in Somalia-, -
Angola, South Africa, Arme-
nia, Peru and former Yugosla-=
via should be vigorously op-
posed. There is, however, no
need to invoke the Holocaust
whenever atrocities are
committed.
