The depiction of Israeli
society shows nothing but
cynicism, cruelty and pain,
without any saving graces.
The mad vengeance of the
soldiers goes beyond exag-
geration; it's absurd, and not
in the way Carus meant it.
But the disturbing part of
Life According to Agfa is
that for all it's ridiculous ex-
sesses, it contains a large
kernel of truth. Anybody
who lives in this country
meets, almost daily, many
Israelis who bristle with ag-
gression, who have perma-
nent scowls on their faces,
yihose casual conversation is
scalding. And most anybody
who has done army duty in
the West Bank or Gaza has
seen at least some racist
Israeli soldiers act like
brutal conquerors.
"It's not just the way I see
°Israel," said Mr. Dayan.
"It's the way it is. Open the
newspapers."
In the film soldiers
try to rape a young woman
who had left her kibbutz for
Tel Aviv. On the day of my
interview with Dayan, there
was a front-page story about
13-year-old kibbutz girl
who was raped and beaten
up by three soldiers at an
"induction party" in
Rehovot for a young draftee.
Police say the other young
people at the party heard the
girl's screams and even
peeked inside the bedroom to
watch the rape. They did
nothing to stop it.
Recently, a prominent
Israeli said, "Many people in
our society suffer from
callousness. I don't know
why. In the once compas-
sionate Jewish heart, I find
too much insensitivity to
others, too much argumen-
tativeness. Over the past few
years, we have seen a grow-
ing extremism and har-
shness in human relations
and too little concern for
one's fellow man. What has
happened to us?"
This was not Assi Dayan
speaking, or one of the
characters in his film. This
was Prime Minister Yitzhak
Rabin, speaking to the
Israeli Bar Association.
The director of Life Accor-
ding to Agfa said that if the
film does well in foreign film
festivals, he may try to
release it in the United
States. U.S. Jews would do
well to see it — to take it
with a grain of salt, but to
see it.
