But Will They
Keep Kosher on Mars?

It's a downer to know,
courtesy of a special issue of
Time, that, in the next cen-
tury, "love and marriage
will be dangerous sports"
and the nuclear family will
"go boom!"
But there are several
glimmers of optimism about
what to expect by the year
2099. Forty-one percent of
those polled think the world
will be in "better shape" at
the end of the 21st century
than it is to today; 43 per-
cent said humans "will
make regular trips to other
planets," and 55 percent
thought religion "will play a
greater role in the lives of
people in this country after
the year 2000."
For Christians, the even
better news is that 53 per-
cent of those polled said the
second coming of Jesus will
occur "sometime" in the
next 1,000 years. And 22
percent polled expect one

world government will rule
the entire planet, while 11
percent anticipate one
worldwide religion. (No
details were given on which
religion will be triumphant.)
For Jews, the best news
may be, according to Time
writer Richard Ostling's
prognostications, that by the
year 2092 "virtually all
Christians" will be united
"in a cultural movement to
eradicate the last vestiges of
anti-Jewish sentiment." Mr.
Ostling also suggests that,
in another 100 years, "the
triumph of feminist religion
caused many Christians and
Jews to shun references to
God in personal terms (no
more Lord or Heavenly
Father.)" The negative effect
of this new nomenclature, he
predicts, is that it will
"strengthen the groups that
worship a mysterious na-
ture-force or seek to deify the
self."

Boycott Law Suit
Filed By AJCongress

Washington (JTA) — The
American Jewish Congress
is filing a lawsuit against
the U.S. Commerce Depart-
ment, charging that it is
withholding documents per-
taining to the alleged coop-
eration of Baxter Interna-
tional Inc. with the Arab
League boycott against
Israel.
Baxter, a multibillion-
dollar hospital and health
care company based in Il-
linois, is under criminal in-
vestigation by the U.S. At-
torney's Office in Chicago on
charges that it violated U.S.
laws barring compliance
with the boycott.
The charges stem from
Baxter's activities in the
late 1980s when it closed a
plant in Israel and agreed to
build a medical factory in
Syria. Although Baxter later
scrapped its agreement with
Syria, the U.S. Attorney's
Office is investigating
whether Baxter closed the
Israeli plant in order to do
business with Arab coun-
tries.
Beginning last February,
AJCongress requested
documents from the Com-
merce Department regal.:

ding Baxter's business af-
fairs, a right guaranteed
under the Freedom of Infor-
mation Act.
"In May, AJCongress'
final appeal within the
Department of Commerce
was denied, and so we were
left with no alternative but
to file suit in federal court to
obtain these documents,"
said Will Maslow,
AJCongress' general counsel
and editor of its "Boycott
Report" newsletter.
Mr. Maslow said he is
"particularly interested in a
report prepared by Baxter's
special counsel that in-
vestigated boycott charges
against the company."
Baxter spokesman Geof-
frey Fenton said the lawsuit
is something between the
Commerce Department and
AJCongress.
"We've continued to coop-
erate with the ongoing in-
vestigation," said Mr. Fen-
ton. "But at the same time,
Baxter continuously and
strenuously denies any
wrongdoing."

The greatest pain is that
which you can't tell others.
