Black-Jewish
Program In D.C.

In recent years, Jewish
leaders have desperately
tried to heal the rift between
blacks and Jews. But the
real healing may come from
small, local programs that
encourage members of both
communities to work
together and learn about
each others' concerns.
A model program with just
these intentions is starting
in Washington. It is pattern-
ed after a program created in
Philadelphia nine years ago
by former Rep. Bill Gray.
Project Understanding
will take six Jewish and six
black high school students
for an educational excursion
to Senegal and Israel. The
idea, says Karen Kalish, a
media consultant who sin-
gle-handedly developed the
Washington program, is to
sow seeds that will produce
new understanding when
these young people become
opinion leaders in their own
communities.
"In the year before their
trip," she said, "they will at-
tend workshops and semi-
nars so they can start learn-
ing about each other before
they get on a plane together.
Then, when they get to
Senegal and Israel, they will
be ready to learn."
Participants will speak to
student groups about their
experiences. In effect, said
Ms. Kalish, participants will
be ambassadors of goodwill
to their own communities.
Already, groups from both
communities have expressed
strong interest in the pro-
gram, including several
African-American churches,
the office of Washington
Mayor Sharon Pratt Kelly,
and the local Jewish com-
munity council.

Pitching Bush
To Jews

For Republicans, attrac-
ting Jewish voters is more of
a problem, given most Jews'
Democratic predisposition
and the potholes in
U.S.-Israeli relations in the
past few years.
But that hasn't stopped
Cheryl Halpern from pit-
ching in.
Ms. Halpern, co-chair of
the GOP's effort to get Jew-
ish votes in November, has
been making the case for the
Bush-Quayle ticket in an
endless criss-crossing of her
home state of New Jersey.
