Amateur Video Award
CARLA JEAN SCHWARTZ
Local Column ist
he Democratic Na-
tional Committee
(DNC) recently held
an amateur video contest in
which contestants were ask-
ed to produce a 30-second TV
spot to help the DNC media
campaign. David
Schechter of West Bloom-
field received an honorable
mention for his video, "Mr.
Smooth is Back."
Mr. Smooth is President
Bush according to David, a
University of Michigan
senior and communications
major. David chose scenes of
Mr. Bush playing golf
interspersed with urban
blight. The musical score
was the song "Civil War" by
Guns and Roses. "The video
represents youth and change
for the Democratic Party. I
think this appealed to a
younger audience. It
signifies the dissatisfaction
about what's going on in the
country," said David.
More than 100 videos were
submitted to a panel of
judges that included Ronald
H. Brown, the DNC chair-
man; Mike Medavoy,
TriStar Pictures chairman;
Mandy Grunwald, media
consultant, Clinton for Pres-
ident; Jonathan Demme,
film director; and more
Hollywood directors. David
was the only winner from
the Midwest. Most of the
winners were from either
New York or California.
David is an intern at
Channel 4 and hopes to
become a television news
reporter.

VEGAS HONEYMOON
When Karen Cohen of
Farmington Hills vacation-
ed in Las Vegas last year,
she volunteered to be an
extra in the film Honeymoon
in Vegas. She was paid $50
to walk to a slot machine
and pull the lever. She had
the opportunity to see stars
Nicholas Cage, James
Caan, Sarah Jessica
Parker and Ernie Shaver.
Since it was her birthday,
the Elvis look alikes in the
film sang her "Happy Birth-
day." Unfortunately, Ms.
Cohen's movie debut was
postponed since her scene
ended up on the cutting
room floor. But, she is happi-
ly back home in Farmington
Hills working on her
gourmet candy business.
