The findings are disturbing: an increase in anti-Semitic vandalism; an increase
in the severity of those incidents; changes in types of vandalism and threats and
harassments; and of course the realization that the college campus represents the
arena of the most significant increase!
1991 was the year in which what we call "the first lynching of a Jew since Leo
Frank, in 1913" occurred: the hunting down and murder of a Jew solely because
he was Jewish and got caught by the mob: the murder of Yankel Rosenbaum in
Crown Heights.
That's what the Anti-Defamation League's audit of anti-Semitic
harassment shows; a summary of the report is included in today
for you to see for yourself.

Republishing this audit is a new project for Michigan ADL Board. We do so in
this time of demagoguery (white and Black), in this time of tension and conflict
between groups, in this time of tolerating intolerance, in this time of a national
mood of indifference, in this time of increasing attacks on all minorities, in this
time of resurgence of hate groups, in this time of ....because we believe, as we
always have, that an informed and alert Jewish community, a strong Jewish com-
munity with strong Jewish agencies, is still the best defense we can have.
