utside of Coe Rail's
Michigan Clipper Din-
ner Train, I can't
remember the last time being
on a rail runner but it's been
a long long time.
That's why the recent Am-
trak experience offered by
Chuck Muer to his Gandy
Dancer in Ann Arbor was
such an adventure.
Dan Huntsbarger, general
manager of Gandy Dancer,
says it's nothing new for
romantic couples, groups and
train buffs who have been tak-
ing the train to dinner at Gan-
dy Dancer for years . . . The
restaurant's name, by the way,
comes from the maintenance
folks working on the railroads
who swing the spiked ham-
mers and lay the track.
It was for us, however,
magical to listen to the train
horn blowing at cross streets
as it rushed smoothly to a
destination of much historic
value.
Gandy Dancer is a grand
elegance of Chuck's dreams. It
began in 1886 as the
Michigan Central Railroad
Station in Ann Arbor on the
route between Buffalo and
Chicago.
He is a buff on historical
restoration and bought it in
1970, keeping the building in-
tact with original stone walls,
slate roof, stained glass win-
dows, red oak ceiling and bag-
gage scale.
Its rejuvenation cost Chuck
more than the norm in open-
ing a new restaurant . . .
When the former Michigan
Central Station in Ann Arbor
was built, it had no electrici-
ty or plumbing . . . His
workmen had to go through
its two-foot Michigan quaried
granite walls and put in the
necessaries . . . A kitchen was
added and baggage and plat-
form area glassed in as one of
the seven dining sectors at the
350-seater Gandy Dancer.
Back on the Twilight
Special Amtrak train which
we boarded at the Dearborn
station (the Detroit station is
also on Michigan), Charley
Gabriel and his trio was put-
ting out a lot of Dixieland and
impromptu off-the-cuff riffing
. . . In what seemed like no
time, we were in Ann Arbor
walking on the brick streets,
brick sidewalk and brick patio
outside the Romanesque-style
Gandy Dancer architecture.
The former train depot was
made into an award-winning

restaurant with white
tablecloths and linens and a
lot of good service to go with
its choice menu selections .. .
This past January, Dan Hunt-
sbarger became Gandy
Dancer's general manager
after two years as executive
chef . . . He must be rightly
proud of his employees, as no
doubt Chuck is . . . Banquet
manager Tracy Coates at the
Amtrak station coordinated
the trip and in the restaurant
helped wait on its passengers
. . . Robin Hardwick, dining
room manager, carrying trays
of dishes; little things that are
really so big, like waitresses
pouring coffee at other tables
even though they were not in
their own wait stations.
Coming and going, if any of
the passengers are not there
on the button, off goes the
train without them . . . Lucki-
ly, everybody made it, with
one couple just a few seconds
to spare.
The Amtrak train to Ann
Arbor's Gandy Dancer for din-
ner was such a success that
more dates have been added
. . . Oct. 13 and 27, Nov. 3 and
24, Dec. 13 and 29, Jan. 5, 12
and 26, Feb. 2, 9, and 23, and
March 2, 16 and 20.
Gandy Dancer is in itself a
wondrous experience . . . In a
poll taken this year by the
Ann Arbor News, it ranked
"best" for atmosphere and
brunch and was among the
top two for best seafood plus
best place to be seen.

the Athenium Hotel in Trap-
per's Alley.
FORTUNE COOKIES are
a clever idea by Truly Grifted
of Royal Oak, owned by Bever-
ly Dovitz, Annie Cohen and
Sue Weisenfeld . . . The gals
celebrate their operation's
first anniversary "by giving
away a fortune" . . .
Customers will be offered for-
tune cookies with 10% to 40%
discounts in them toward pur-
chases made during the Oct.
8-17 sale of specialty items,
gifts, toys, etc. . . . The two
bags they sent me didn't have
any discount slips but sure
had a lot of good things to say.
CONGRATS ... To Harold
Finegood . . . on his 67th bir-
thday . . . The former Statler
