Abstract Views
By Three Artists

Opening the fall season at
the Janice Charach Epstein
Museum/Gallery will be a
painting exhibition featuring
the work of three Detroit-born
artists. The exhibition, which
opens to the public on Sept.
20, features large-scale pain-
tings by Nancy Brett, Brenda
Goodman and Ellen Phelan.
Each of these three artists
graduated from Detroit area
schools (Wayne State Univer-
sity and the Center for
Creative Studies) and moved
on to New York. Their artistic
expression is focused on
abstract landscape painting.
The works being exhibited
in this exhibition have all
been done in the past several
years and express both the in-
ner landscape of the mind's
eye and the outer landscape
that is seen and felt in reali-
ty, painted in brilliant colors
across large expanses of can-
vas and wood.
A catalogue will accompany
the exhibition, which re-
mains on view through Nov.
5. The Museum/Gallery is
located at the Jewish Com-
munity Center of
Metropolitan Detroit. Gallery
hours are Sunday, 11 a.m.-4
p.m.; Monday-Wednesday, 11
a.m.-6 p.m. and Thursday, 11
a . m .- 8 p.m. The
Museum/Gallery will be clos-
ed periodically throughout
September due to the Jewish
High Holy Days. Call
661-1000, to check hours.

Cachepots Are
Swidler Exhibit

Swidler Gallery will feature
indoor gardening containers
by 17 studio artists in "The
Cachepot: Revisiting the
Decorative Pot Hider"
through Oct. 31.
The demand for cachepots
allowed for new forms to
emerge from the cylindrical:
ovals, baskets and mini-
tombs. Today this pot, with its
versatility (used for flowers,
topiary, fruit and bread or as
a wine cooler), continues to
have importance within the
decorative arts.
"The Cachepot: Revisiting
the Decorative Pot Hider"
will offer a fresh insight into
this historical form and its
connection to the gardening
concerns of our time. Some ar-
tists have created singular
pots while others have placed
it into an environment to be
used as mantle garniture.
Swidler Gallery is located
at 308 West Fourth Street in
the Washington Square Plaza
Building in downtown Royal
Oak.
