might eventually be used in
the chemical industry."
Weizmann scientists are not
neglecting the need for elec-
tric power. For the first time
this year, fossil fuels will be
replaced by solar-heated air
to drive a gas turbine. "We
are hoping that commercial
solar gas turbine plants will
offer a low cost, high efficien-
cy technology for electric
power production by the next
decade," says Michael Eps-
tein, director of the Weiz-
mann solar energy program.
Besides generating power,
solar energy can also be used
to purify water and kill car-
cinogens. Concentrated
sunlight has a searing effect
on bacteria and viruses in
waste water, without forming
toxic by-products.
The Ormat Company, a
pioneer in thermal energy
and solar pond technology, is
also in the engineering stage
of desalinating water with
solar energy and in-
vestigating the use of solar-
energy to increase rainfall. A
long tradition of using sun-
shine to heat water, has given
Israel an edge in the produc-
tion of low-temperature solar
heaters for domestic pur-
poses. In the last few years,
solar hot water heaters in
new buildings in Israel have
become mandatory. "Demand
for our system has doubled
not only in Israel in the last
couple of years, but also in a
number of states in the
United States where solar
energy laws have been
enacted."
Amcor has been in the
business of solar heating
systems for more than 25
years and more than 40 per-
cent of its production is ex-
ported. Its black chrome
coated collectors can be found
on the roofs of homes,
hospitals and hotels in Ger-
many, France, Portugal,
Austria, Switzerland and
South Africa as well as the
United States. Solar heating
which can meet the heating
and cooling energy needs for
a home in the desert, will
soon be tested by scientists at
the Sde Boker Institute. They
intend moving into new
homes designed to harness
solar energy. With the aid of
colored panels and tiles to ab-
sorb or inhibit sunrays,
movable insulation, shade
devices and vents, high air
conditioning and heating
bills may soon be a thing of
the past. ❑
