Fragmentation
Is A Danger
The fragmentation of the
Soviet Union into individual
states may well lead to the
detrimental fragmentation of
Soviet Jewry, according to a
Hebrew University of Jerusa-
lem expert on "Soviet Socie-
,, ty in Turmoil: the Grass
Roots."
`-• The conference, sponsored
by the Hebrew University's
Marjorie Mayrock Center for
Soviet and East European
Research and held at the
university, brought together a
number of academic and
I,--, public figures from Russia,
the United States, Britain
and Israel to discuss the im-
pact of the recent upheavals
in the old Soviet Union on
general and Jewish society
there.
Commenting at one session,
Dr. Zeev Katz of the Hebrew
University's Department of
Russian and Slavic Studies,
said that one can no longer
think in terms of Soviet
Jewry as a single entity. More
and more, he said, one can ex-
pect Jews in the various
republics that formerly com-
posed the Soviet empire to
identify themselves with the
local population. This is being
accompanied by a growing
feeling of "affirmation of the
Diaspora" — meaning a de-
• emphasis on aliyah, he said.
This is unfortunate, com-
mented Dr. Katz, since
Jewish life in the former
Soviet empire could benefit
from unified efforts, especial-
) ly so since many places there
lack even minimal conditions
• for maintaining any kind of
I Jewish cultural life. In addi-
tion, he continued, there is
the question of how Jews will
be able to integrate cultural-
ly into those societies where
the stress now is on na-
tionalistic and religious
elements, some of them of an
anti-Israel nature.
Another speaker, Professor
Mordechai Altshuler, head of
the Center for Research and
Documentation of EaSt Euro-
• pean Jewry at the Hebrew
University, also raised the
question of how intermarried
Jews on the periphery of
Jewish self-identification
would be able to find their
place in a new "organic, fun-
damentalistic" Russian socie-
ty that totally rejects all of
the old elements of Soviet
society.
"Post-
on
Speaking
Perestroika and Jewish
Culture," Professor Dmitri
Segal of the Hebrew Univer-
:1, sity's Department of Russian
and Slavic Studies, said that
it was difficult to predict what
forms Jewish culture would
take in the new era .
