Book Center
Makes A Move

South Hadley, Mass. (JTA)
— Forced to leave its home
at the East Street School in
nearby Amherst, the Na-
tional Yiddish Book Center
—'"has found new accommoda-
tions, just off the campus of
Mount Holyoke College
here.
The book center was mov-
ed from Amherst's East
Street School, where it had
been based since 1981, in
order to make room for the
school's growing student
population.
Its new residence is the 18-
room home of the late
Elisabeth Skinner, the last
surviving grandchild of a
noted Holyoke industrialist.
The house, known as The
Orchards, was left to Mount
Holyoke College.
The book center signed a
two-year lease.
An agreement is currently
being negotiated with
Hampshire College in
Amherst to make a perma-
nent home there for the
center, according to executive
director Stephen Hays.
Aaron Lansky, founder
and president of the Nation-
al Yiddish Book Center, is a
Hampshire College alumnus
who was awarded a "genius"
grant in 1989 by the MacAr-
thur Foundation for his
---, efforts to establish the
world's only repository of
Yiddish books.
It is estimated that it will
take another two to three
years before the center com-
pletes construction of its
permanent building.

year draws to a close,

take this opportunity to say
