Oldest Burial Sites
In Carmel Mts.

The Machpelah Cave in
Hebron, burial place of the
Patriarchs and Matriarchs,
may be more famous, but the
Tabun Cave on the Cannel
c mountains not far from Haifa
may be the prototype of the
burial cave. The Carmel caves
area may also prove one of the
earliest stomping grounds of
Homo sapiens, going back a
half million years.
. These conclusions, which
may change the textbooks,
have been reached by a
University of Haifa ar-
chaeologist, Professor
7ham Ronen, who has
digging at the Camel
,,-iairi site for 15 years.
Professor Ronen based his
conclusions on the results of
a new system of radiactive
radiation dating on finds from
the Carmel caves made by
British and French scientists.
Professor Ronen's reassess-
ment showed that certain
flint tools from the site were
120,000 years old. This meant
that the skeleton of a woman
that had been found buried
one ground layer beneath
those artifacts had to be
"somewhat" older: anywhere
up to 10,000 years older. More
importantly, according to the
University of Haifa ar-
chaeologist, it signified that
the act of burying the dead
was twice as old, at least, as
had previously been thought.
The Tabun Cave, then, may
well be the world's first burial
plot.
During the past season's
dig, two other investigators,
Dr. Minna Evron of Haifa
University's archaeology
department, and Dr. Alex-
ander Chetchkin, a geologist,
descended to the bottom of a
nearby cave, the Gamal Cave.
The artifacts and geological
evidence found there led them
to infer that the site was a
half million years old. Their
estimate, in effect, doubled
the once accepted age.
The evidence also led to
another startling inference.
This was that the height of
the Mediterranean Sea was
some 50 meters above its pre-
sent level. The Carmel caves,
in that case, would have
fronted practically right on
the water.
Professor Ronen pointed to
the Carmel caves as one of the
most important prehistory
sites in the world. This was
due not only to the multitude
of finds making the area a
kind of field museum. Its
main significance lies, he
said, in demonstrating the
continuity of settlement at
the site for hundreds of
thousands of years.
