Dr. Robert L. Cowen, a West
Bloomfield Township resident
and a Detroit urologist for 60
years, died Sept. 18. He was
98.
Born in Harrisburg, Pa., Dr.
Cowen graduated in 1917
from the Detroit College of
Medicine and Surgery, now
Wayne State University
School of Medicine. He serv-
ed as a captain in the U.S. Ar-
my Medical Corps during
World War I and continued
service as a captain in the
Michigan National Guard.
An 80-year member of Phi
Delta Epsilon fraternity and
the recipient of several
fellowships, Dr. Cowen was a
founding member of North
Detroit General and Sinai
hospitals. He was a founding
member of Temple Israel in
Detroit.
He is survived by his wife,
Minnie Silverman Cowen;
daughter and son-in-law, Har-
riet and Paul Welch of Bloom-
field Hills; son, George Cowen
of West Bloomfield; three
grandchildren.

tions Committee and director
of the Cultural Commission
of the Jewish Community
Council of Metropolitan
Detroit from 1956-1964, died
in New York. He was 78.
He was national program
director of the Farband-
Jewish National Workers'
Alliance. Prior to his death,
he was national director of
research for United HIAS
(Hebrew Immigrant Aid
Society).
Surviving him are his wife,
Hannah of New York; son,
Aaron of New York; daughter,
Ahuva of Israel; seven grand-
children. Funeral services
were held in New York; burial
took place in Israel.
